Title: What other Canadian shows should I watch ?
Post by: RangerF150 on Mar 21, 2005, 03:19 PM
Hi ya all :-)

I am of course addicted to the TPB's , i don't really watch any TV except the odd movie or two .

However i was wondering if you guys could suggest any other funny Canadian stuff i can get ( gotta be available on Amazon ) .

I did get Made In Canada , the hilarious comedy that after two episodes i found unfunny :-(

I see some Canadian movies , that look interesting , any suggestions ?

Thanks for input :-)

Made in Canada unfunny?  :(

Oh well, they got my vote

TPB is the best thing to hit Canadian television in such a long time, I can't really think of much else (that would be available through Amazon, anyway).

I hear Corner Gas is funny, but I've tried to watch it on 3 separate occasions and fell asleep every time.  I need loud noises and lots o' swearing to keep me awake, I guess

Start with this:

SCTV became the call letters for the fictional Second City television station and a highly successful seven year series was launched. SCTV began its broadcast history on Global television in Canada and in syndication in the States but moved on to NBC and finally to the Cinemax Cable Network. The cast, including John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Dave Thomas, and later Martin Short, received unqualified praise from both the Canadian and American press and developed an ever increasing loyal following.

During its long and varied history SCTV garnered 13 Emmy Award nominations, and two Emmy Awards for best writing. At final count there are 185 half hour shows produced[.]

Good link:  http://sctv.org/intro.htm

Cheers!

OMG - how could I forget those unforgettable characters!  LOL!  Just last night better half and I were watching TV when a really cheesy "home made" TV ad came on for something.  It was so bad, when BH and I looked at each other, all I could say was, "That's right, Edna."  LOL!

And SCTV DVD's ARE indeed available through amazon.com!

The fact that you say ( gotta be available on Amazon ) kind of limits my recommendations.  Unfortunately a lot of great Canadian stuff went unnoticed.

Of course you should get SCTV which was already mentioned, they were considered “the comedian’s comedians”.

Another Canadian classic was Kids in the Hall which is available on DVD.  It is sketch comedy like Monty Python, and it doesn't have those dumb cartoon segments.

You should also get The Newsroom

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001BG1OM/qid%3D1111441316/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-3412559-6100805

This uses the same sort of mocumentary style as TPB and The Office and came out before those two.  If you like The Office you should like The Newsroom.

P.S. I didn’t think Made In Canada was funny either.

I have a long list of other great Canadian stuff but it is not available from Amazon.

Isn't there some mockumentry on about funeral directors in Newfoundland? Mary Welsh is in it I believe. I heard that was good.

For Canadian programming I'd also recommend SCTV and Corner Gas. I can't fairly comment on the Kids in the Hall because I never got into it.

But for something a little closer to home, give The Office a chance (if you haven't already done so).

The newsroom does sound good , i love the office , so i guess id better put on the list .

Considering i think that John Candy is god , i guess id better check out SCTV, except i got Canadian Bacon cos John Candy was in it , it was crap , gave up after an hour :-(

If you love John Candy then there's no reason why you won’t like SCTV. It's some of his early material, but funny nonetheless.

I think the stuff Candy did on SCTV was by far his best work, the stuff he did after pales in comparison.

I agree Canadian Bacon wasn't very good.

Actuallly the Kids in the Hall looks pretty good :-)

Any info on the bottlekids suggestion about the mockumentry on about funeral directors in Newfoundland?

Now that sounds like fun :-)

I did a google , found nothin , except funeral directors in Newfoundland, considering i don't plan on getting buried in Newfoundland , i did'nt contact any of them ....

Maybe i should , could be a hell of a lot cheaper than over here :-)

Hell anything to save a buck !

Oh, my credit card is getting damm close to being maxed out with this list , thanks :-)

Thanks everyone :-)

I watched this show on CBC today called "Nerve". Maybe someone else has seen it but it's fucking edgy for being in the 5:30 timeslot right before the news. They had a girl half rapping about how ghetto her hood was and she was dropping N-bombs and cussing, it was pretty refreshing. They also showed the world championships of Rock Paper Scissors which was pretty neat, in a nerdy-I-cant-do-anything-else-with-my-life kinda way.

I gotta go to bed , i hope i don't have a nightmare like i did last night , Ricki was trying to steal my truck ....

I ended up givin him the keys to the truck , two smokes, a can of beer ( my last one) and 20 bucks to get gas :-(

Hey RumNCoke have you ever watched The Newsroom?  Like I stated in my first post in this thread if you like The Office you should like The Newsroom.

Also BoTTleKid since you like Curb Your Enthusiasm you should like it as well, the main character is very neurotic, like Larry David, he is supposedly that way in real life.

It first aired in 1996 but there have only been a few seasons. There is a new season currently airing.  I watched it tonight, it was very good, like it was the first season.

Here is a link on the Newfoundland show ...

http://www.cbc.ca/hatching/

I saw it, not sure if it will be a series or not.  Only the pilot has aired so far.

It was written by Mary Walsh and Ed MacDonald aka The Bible Pimp.  He used to write for 22 Minutes as well.

Nope, I've never watched The Newsroom before. And speaking of The Office, NBC, which bought the rights to the British comedy, is coming out with an American version. Now before you start criticizing read this:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/24/arts/television/24stan.html

I'm glad they're staying true to the original concept of the show and not turning it into "Friends."

EDIT: Hmm, for some reason the link doesn't work as expected. If you want to read the article just Google "The Office". Look near the top. You should see:
"An American-Style 'Office' With a Boss From Heck - New York Times." That'll take you to it.

It’s hard keeping up with all the SCTV DVDs.  There’s 3 out so far and another on the way.  The worst part is they are so expensive, I got the second one as a Christmas gift, I’ll have to wait to get the third one.  The reason they are so expensive is because they had to pay all the proper licensing for the musical acts.  They had some pretty good ones such as Roy Orbison, John Cougar, The Boomtown Rats and Dave Edmunds to name a few.  They would often have the musical guest act in skits, the John Cougar one was really funny, he actually morphed into Martin Short’s Ed Grimley.  Bob Geldolf was also very funny in their spoof of the movie “To Sir With Love”.

I'm surprised that no one has thought of....

The Red-Green Show!  (I mean come on.. thats funny.)
Or how about Chilly Beach!  (It easily gives the Simpsons a run for their money.)
Rick Mercer's Monday Report
This hour has 22 minutes

Then there are great Canadien shows that aren't necessarily comedy related.

La Femme Nakita
Forever Knight.
Due South
This is Wonderland
DaVinci's inquest.
Women in Prison
To Catch a thief.
Tech Wars
Degrassi
Night Heat
Cold Squad
Neon Rider
Beach Combers.
The Rez.

Movies:
Strange Brew  (Tell me this isn't funny)
Videodrome
Agnes of God
Jesus of Montreal
Dance Me Outside
Les Boys 1, 2 and 3  (Again tell me this isn't funny)
Whale Music
The Grey Fox
Fly away home

Man I can compile an entire list of some really great stuff.  Hell compared to the rest of the world.... We produce alot and some of the most origional and best stuff out there.

Not trying to Flame... but if there is one thing I have noticed and that is Canadiens have an blooming inferiorty complex about our televions shows and entertainment.

There is only apx 30 million of us compared to almost 300 million americans.  Thier shows can suck worse than some of ours but they manufacture sooooo much of them that we get flooded with cheap programs that have a ton of hype and promotion behind them.  (Like American Idol.... Cheap to make and gets an entire nation voting for who is the best karaoke singer.)

It transfers to the music industry too.  When I lived in L.A. I can't tell you how many people were convinced that Niel Young, Lover Boy and Nickelback are american.  Why? because we won't admit that we can make good shit!

And don't forget we are responsible for some awsome cartoons too.  Hell Mainframe from B.C did the newest Transformers saga "Beast Wars." And although Astroboy was campy, telefilm made some cool crap too.

As for L.A. and the american entertainment industry down there.  There are over 600k Canadiens in Los Angeles and that makes L.A. our 5th largest city.  We dominate a major part of their industry.

Even on my side of the entertainment coin we are well represented and most of the top male performers are Canadien.

I was in the nexus of Television and movie central and I spent many many many night flipping through over a 100 channels of NOTHING but crap.  I was ready to blow up my TV if I was going to be forced to watch one more stupid american family sitcom like Full House.

I say again, the american product is not any better than ours... It's just marketed like a McDonalds Big Mac hamburger.

"You get a whole lot of empty calories with sweet sauce to help ease the grease past your taste buds.  It's flavour is far from  that of a good old fashion backyard barbque banquet-burger with all the toppings.  It is mass produced, easy to get and the advertising is there to tell you to believe it is better than any other burger you can have.   And it tastes the same every friggin time regardless if you buy in Calgary or Portland."

For me.... No thank you, I don't want something that can only promise me a triple heart bypass from clogged arteries.  I want something I can sink my teeth into and lick my lips in satisfaction.

If you ask me and no one has.  In the entertainment industry it is high time we stop trying to get the American seal of approval before we consider ourselves good.

I agree with you HS. Canada has some really good stuff. I loved Degrassi! BeachCombers.....who couldn't love Relic.....he was such a great bad guy! I liked King Of Kensington as well. The Rez....wasn't on long but I watched that show. I really liked North Of 60 too. Chilly Beach is really cute! I know there are a lot of Simpsons fans out there and I used to be one but I can't stand to watch that show anymore! It's time they ended that cartoon! The show has been on for probably CLOSE to 20 years and Bart is still 8!!! Even the Flintstones had Bam Bam and Pebbles grow up!!

More Office related news:

Quote from: www.imdb.com
The men accused of stealing nearly $380,000 from award-winning British comic Ricky Gervais have been found guilty. The thieves stole the money to buy 60 pounds of gold from bullion dealer Anthony Baird, who called police after someone claiming to be Gervais placed a large order with his company. In a move to protect their true identities, the fraudsters altered a dead pensioner's passport with a picture of the actor's The Office character David Brent, copied from a DVD cover of the cult series. Of the five defendants - Kenneth Speight, Sharonjeet Snobber, Mushtaq Javed, Craig Reeves and Harry Peach - Speight and Reeves have been convicted of two counts of conspiracy to defraud between February 21 and April 8 2003. They're currently in jail waiting to be sentenced. Snobber and Peach were both cleared of any wrongdoing, but Javed faces a re-trial on two conspiracy counts.

I would have listed more shows (not some of the ones you mentioned) as well but as I stated I was limited by the fact that Ranger150 stated he only wanted shows that were available on Amazon, or online.  This eliminates many Canadian shows out because they went unnoticed.  I'm still trying to find anything from the shows Codco and Butch Patterson Private Dick, I can't even download the stuff.

Strange Brew is the best Canadian Comedy film I would recommend.  Fubar isnt bad as well as Kids in the Hall's movie "Brain Candy" although the last 2 movies lose their luster quickly and I doubt I would watch them again for a long time.  As for tv shows Kids in the Hall is decent and I hear Corner Gas aint bad. SCTV is funny but so outdated its hard for me to watch anymore.  Red Green has its moments but the nephew is so annoying it ruins the show.

Don't believe the haters. Canadian Bacon was excellent and I'll aruge it with anyone any day. And to say that John Candy's best work was with SCTV???? The man is rolling over in his grave. Valid point CG, the SCTV they show on Canada’s The Comedy Network is awful!  I don’t know why but every time I tune it I switch very quickly.   They seem to show the shitty years/skits over and over again.  As I mentioned before the DVDs are where it’s at!  I swear after watching the DVDs you will understand why they were considered the “Comedian’s comedians” by so many established comedian at the time, and I guarantee IT IS TIMELESS COMEDY.  I saw some things on the DVD I didn't ever remember seeing and holy fuck it was brilliant!  I think it beats watching Seinfeld repeats anyday.

Shitty Bill I  believe that if you were familiar with all of Candy’s VAST volume of brilliant work on SCTV, you would see why I said his best work, at least comedic work, was on that show. The characters he developed and the impressions he did were amazing, and I think that is true for the rest of the SCTV cast as well.  I will say in your defense, however, that he should have won an Oscar, or at least have been nominated, for "Planes, Trains and Automobiles".

Hit it on the head, I was reffering to Planes, Trains and Automobiles. And I completely understand your point. Lets call Planes, Trains his best single piece of work and SCTV his best body of work. Comparing a single film to a entire run of a television series is apples and oranges.

That show is done by Greg Lawrence who did "Butch Patterson, Private Dick", an extremely funny show.  That show should have been a worldwide hit, but it hardly got noticed even here in Canada, like I said before I can’t even find episodes to download.  The show was shot in Ottawa and I still see some of the actors around town every once in a while.

I only caught a few shows of Four on the Floor a few years back when they ran it on Comedy Network, I thought it was super funny. Also, when I was a younger, one of my friends had a cassette tape of their comedy (I'm fairly sure it was them although I never saw the cassette case or anything), a couple of songs still stick with me: 'Boot to the Head' & 'I Shot Bambi's Mother'. And one of the skits that confuses a piece of pie with a piece of poo. If anyone knows for sure if this was a tape of them or not let me know!
History Bites is also a good show. If I had learned history this way, I probably would have done better in that subject in school.

I was a Twitch City fan as well, I don’t think we’ll be seeing anymore of that show either.  At least the main actors are busy doing other things now.  Showcase used to show it just before TPB on Thursday nights.  I’d posted a few times at the TPB message board there that people should watch it but I don’t know if I got any takers.

I also recommended another Showcase original at that site, Naked Josh.  It's not a comedy but it is interesting, I missed the first few eps of the new season.

twitch city is also one of my favorite canadian series, i still miss two eps of it tough :( and sure hope they make a new season (whitch they probably wont since its already been too long :( )

It's not a comedy but it is interesting, I missed the first few eps of the new season.

sry just read your reply

Im geussing it didnt get that many takers,   your the first canadian ive meth that actually knows the show :(
Its deffently something im going to buy if the dvd box ever comes out

Hatching, Matching and Dispatching that was mentioned earlier in the thread is coming back on Friday.  More about it here

I watched that Rabbittown show, also set in NFLD, and really liked it.  Andy Jones from Codco is in it.  I loved his Ricardo Huerta character on Codco.

Hey elle* here's the link I posted to that show on the first page of this thread...

http://www.cbc.ca/hatching/

I only watched the pilot, have yet to see the new shows.

Also like I posted earlier I did like the pilot CBC had about another show from Newfoundland called Rabbittown.  They played that during Comedy week not that long ago.  Anyone interested can read about that and "Hatching" here...

Yah, I knew Sherry White was familiar.  I had seen Rabbittown that week and never again.  How sad a show that was...I mean, party gal from NL...who is really stuck in the 80's hairdo, gets dumped...gets a haircut that makes her look older than me..and just worn out, etc.  OMG.  It was cute too though.  Would like to see where that show would have went..storywise.

I bow down to you Shake...you know your Canadian boob tube!

It was also the last episode of the season, and judging by the way the CBC is going, it probably won't be back next season.

All I know is that Kids In The Hall was one of the funniest shows of all time and not just one of the funniest canadian shows. SCTV was pretty damn funny and anyone who says they didn't like Degrassi is lying. Fubar is hilarious. I love the part where "Deaner" tries out for the band. I'm really glad someone brought up Twitch City. I thought no one had ever heard of that show. When I was 15 that's how I wanted to be. Do nothing but eat food and watch junk TV all day. That's all I got.
Peace!  :6paper: :ricky:

Put me down as another Twitch City fan (and it's coming out on DVD this year!). Robson Arms is quite good, as is Corner Gas, The Newsroom and This Is Wonderland. Kids in the Hall is brilliant and I can't wait until they release the fifth and final season on DVD so I can complete the series!

If you're looking for some good Canadian films with a humourous bent, I recommend:

Childstar (2004) --Don McKellar's witty sendup of children actors and big Hollywood productions in Canada. KITH's Dave Foley is an exasperated producer and Jennifer Jason Leigh plays McKellar's love interest! McKellar is Canada's greatest actor/writer/director!

The Delicate Art of Parking (2004) --a mockumentary about the life of Vancouver parking-meter attendants, featuring a couple of castmembers of Corner Gas.

The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico (2005) --another mockumentary, this time about a fictional country singer.

It's All Gone Pete Tong (2005) --from the Calgary director of FUBAR, this one's about the exploits of a British DJ.

C.R.A.Z.Y. (2005) --so good that the Americans want to make an English-language remake. It's about a dysfunctional family in Quebec in the 70s, featuring a cool soundtrack of Bowie and other glam rockers.

The Canadian film industry, more than just David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan! ;)

Have heard mixed review's of it, it's in the local video store so I best have a look for myself.

I did order DaVinchi's inquest on DVD, it's out of stock in amazon.ca, so I got to wait a month or so.

C.R.A.Z.Y sound's good :-)

Twitch City will finally be coming out on DVD?  Really?  I would love it if that's true and would buy it in a second, but I can't seem to find a single source on the web to back that up (retailers, CBC online store, Don McKellar fan sites, etc...).  Where did you hear this?

BTW, is your last name McKellar ... or is it just a homage to Don McKellar?

Wow this cable channel Country Canada is amazing!  I didn't even know I had it, by the sound of it I thought it was a nature channel, what with the fishing and the hunting, I figured it would all be Red Fisher type stuff.  Apparently it plays many of the shows mentioned in this thread.  As I mentioned in another thread are showing Butch Patterson: Private Dick every weekday, and as I mentioned earlier in this thread it just happens to be one of the best show ever made.  I just found out they are also showing Twitch City itself on Saturday nights, what a channel!!!

I have to say I'm thrilled that Degrassi The Next Generation is back and it is back with a vengeance!  What with the back to back episodes 2 weeks in a row!

It was chosen in this thread, or at least the Degrassi series was, as the best Canadian show of the last 20 years.

'Little Mosque on the Prairie' = big laughs?

TORONTO, Ontario (Hollywood Reporter) -- "Little Mosque on the Prairie," a Canadian sitcom that debuts Tuesday, January 9, depicts immigrant Muslims bumping up against white locals in rural Saskatchewan.

Zarqa Nawaz, creator and writer of the groundbreaking show, insists she's an equal-opportunity satirist taking dead-aim at both Muslim and Canadian stereotypes in a post-September 11 world.

"I expect both groups will be wondering if the other finds the showexternal link funny," says Nawaz.

There are predictable jokes about Muslim beliefs clashing with Canadian traditions. In one scene, a father wearing a kufi, or a knitted cap worn by devout Muslims, protests that his Canadian-born daughter wearing a revealing tank top looks "like a Protestant."

"Don't you mean prostitute?" the daughter asks.

"No, I meant a Protestant," the father replies.

In another scene, a young man of Middle Eastern origins with a Canadian accent is heard in an airport check-in line telling his mother via cell phone that his father shouldn't think his choosing to stop being a Toronto lawyer to become an imam in Saskatchewan amounts to career "suicide."

"This is Allah's plan for me," the young man says in passing, before an arresting cop appears suddenly and tells the surprised lawyer that he won't be making that appointment in Paradise.

Nawaz, a British-born Muslim and mother of four who settled on the Prairies with her family a decade ago, downplays the idea that the homegrown comedy may spark widespread controversy.

She insists her comedy springs from a relatively uneventful life in multicultural North America, unlike Europe, for example, where relations between Muslims and the wider Christian community are often a powder keg.

"North America should be the first place where a comedy like this would come about, where Muslims can be comfortable in their own skin and questions of Canadian identity can produce a sitcom," she says.

To ensure it doesn't cause unforeseen offense with "Little Mosque on the Prairie," the government-owned Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) has hired an independent Muslim-Canadian consultant to comb through the sitcom's creative elements and suggest possible alterations.

Kirstine Layfield, CBC executive director of network programming, says recent preview screenings with select Muslim audiences elicited encouraging results -- laughter.

"Just doing the series is a risk in itself, but one the public broadcaster should take on if we're to help communicate authenticity of living in Canada," Layfield adds.

Mary Darling, one of three executive producers shopping the Canadian comedy stateside, says a U.S. airing may help break down barriers between faith communities.

"It won't do any harm, and maybe it can do some good," she says.

Well I just finished watching the last episode of Degrassi: The Next Generation.  I missed it but heard on their promos the eps are available on broadband on their site.  So apparently anyone outside Canada can check it out it they desire, www.ctv.ca.

So I tried with IE I went to the site clicked what I thought were the right buttons but nothing happened.  So I figured I’d try FF, see if that was any better.  First though I’m told I had to download the latest version of FF.  After that was done I was told I had to download the latest Active X for media player.  So I did that and only got the audio.  So I went back to IE and yes this time it worked, perhaps the new active X thing was all that was missing.

Lard tunderin!

Yous are in for a treat ladies and germs through the miracle of youtube, one of the most brilliant pieces of comedy ever made.  From SCTV s spoof of the British punk rock movement, and, more specifically the Sex Pistols “God Save the Queen”.  The great Martin Short on vocals, Eugene Levy on guitar, and the late great John Candy on drums.

What makes it even more brilliant is that it's is a fucking kickass tune, one of the best punk rock songs ever written!

Ha ha no SMG Corner Gas is aiight.

So I watched Brain Candy, the Kids in the Hall movie recently.  I saw this when it first came out and hardly remembered it.  I watched it again and really liked it, found it really funny.  Also I thought that the big boss man of the company sort of reminded me of Dr.  Evil.  Then I remembered that Dr. Evil’s mannerisms and voice were inspired by Lorne Michaels.  Michaels also produced Kids in the Hall.  So I did a search and found out that yes McKinney based his character on Micheals’ mannerisms and voice.  Remember Brain Candy came out before “Austin Powers”.  I always thought Dr.  Evil was the funniest part of that show.  Lorne Michaels has contributed so much to comedy  :)

I recently saw the 1st season of "Slings & Arrows" - picked it up for $2 at the local library's book sale. Not the best show but definitely worth the investment. I would think that theater types would relate to it best, but it was entertaining enough to hold my interest to the end, and make me want to see the next season (which I suspect I'll have to pay a bit more for!). Don McKellar was in a couple episodes and he is a genius.

This is a great list.

Might I add Men with Brooms and Paschendale, both directed by and starring Paul Gross.

and The Littlest Hobo

Which, by the way, does anyone else note the resemblance between Mike Clattenburg and Paul Gross?

You can add "Foolproof" and "Bon Cop, Bad Cop" to the list.  Also, Foolproof is a poster in TPB movie - in the cinema where they do the big dirty and in "The Littlest Hobo" is also scene on Ricky's TV in season 3.

Lately I've been watching North of 60. A decent show , plus one of my wife's students dads was a castmember , and another guy who lives in my hometown as well.

Another , with lots of TPB connections, is Black Harbor. It's shown daily here , in the morning. Takes place in Nova Scotia. John Dunsworth is the Halifax casting director , and Barry Dunn plays a nasty gangster. I was chatting with Sarah D last night , and mentioned the show , turns out she was the assistant director for 3 years , plus had some bit parts!!

Great news!!!  One of the funniest shows ever is now available on DVD!  This show was shot here in Ottawa and was on The Comedy Network but hardly anyone knows about it.

Butch Patterson, Private Dick

TPB fans should really like this show, I highly recommend it!

You can get it here

Has anyone seen Wonderfalls?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361256/

Not sure this is from Canada but it's filmed on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and was recommended to me as a great comedy/dramedy series. I'm trying to download the pilot now, but it's coming very slowly.

I found this review of it; (in a list of the 'best canceled comedies')

Wonderfalls
March 2004 - April 2004
Arguably the most quirky of Bryan Fuller's shows (more so than Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me), though a close battle to be sure. This one centered on Jaye, a college-educated slacker who is putting her Ivy-League philosophy degree to good use working at a Niagara Falls gift shop, when inanimate objects (a wax lion, mounted fish, brass monkey) start talking to her and giving her missions. On around the same time as Joan of Arcadia, it faced inevitable comparisons, but this off-the-wall series never really addressed if the beings giving Jaye missions were good or bad, mostly just that they were driving those around her (especially her family) to think she was a nut job ready to be committed. But, you know, in a loving sort of way. Like Fuller's other fare, this one never grabbed a big audience and was axed by Fox after only a handful of episodes.

It was canceled after 14 episodes.

Would be good to hear a second opinion from someone who has watched it if it's worth the days and days of downloading it looks like it will take to get it all.  8)

I'm probably the only one on this site that has seen this show but my favorite show, non-comedy is now Traders.  It is set on Bay Street, the financial disrtrict in Toronto.  They only have season one out on DVD and I went through it really quickly, I'm hoping to order more.  They do show repeats of it on MovieTime 7pm every week.  They are showing a later season now so I haven't seen all the episodes.  It kills me that I have to wait a week between shows.

Harold on the Red Green show is on it, he plays a seriously hard-assed boss trader an extremely different role than the goofy Harold, which shows you just how talented he must be.  You might recognize some other Canadian actors as well.

This may be a bit off topic, but I went to an all girls catholic high school for 2 years and during study hall a group of friends and I would go to the "media centre" during that period. 5 of us would gather around this TINY tv screen...it couldn't have been more then 6x6. We'd all plug in these GIANT headphones and watch episodes of the original Degrassi Junior High! LOL! I think those old nuns had NO idea what the hell the show was about otherwise it would have been removed from the video library IMMEDIATELY! It was better then any American soap opera on television at the time! We were so hooked! (we were 13-14 years old) Degrassi Jr. High was shown on our Public Television Station which has much more liberal standards then regular broadcast tv here. After we watched all the episodes and the show was taken off here; I sorta forgot about it. Then we started watching TPB when Directv started carrying them this year...

I almost PISSED myself when I realized WHY J-Roc looked so familiar...

He was SHANE on Degrassi Jr. High?!?!?!?!  Shane, who knocked up Spike in grade 8! Shane who took a hit of acid and somehow fell/got pushed/jumped off a bridge and ended up with brain damage?! OMG...it was such a revelation to me. LOL!

Oh, I have a recommendation too.

Total Drama Island/Action.  :D My boys started watching the cartoon on Cartoon Network last year. I am one of those people that don't like "Survivor", "Big Brother" and all those other shows, so I was sure a cartoon spoofing those shows would bore me tears...

NOPE. I love it. I am as into it as they are! Freakin' funny stuff. True it is aimed towards 'tweens but who doesn't like a good cartoon now and then?

My 3 year old is the world's biggest "Max and Ruby" fan. If you have a little one, especially if they have older bossy siblings, this is a great show. I know no one was specifically looking for children's shows, but plenty of TPB fans have kids, so I thought I'd throw those out there too.

I'm not a big Degrassi fan but I didn't think Torrens played the original Shane but did play him in Degrassi TNG. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That is correct Fishy, Torrens was not the original Shane, but played him on an episode of TNG.  His daughter, Amanda?, was curious about him so she visited him in the hospital where he stays.

I had no idea Torrens was in TNG!

I was in walking distance of the "real" De Grassi Street when I lived in TO.

You are correct, he wasn't the original Shane, I should have been more clear. We started watching the show at school...the original Degrassi Jr. High. That's how I got introduced to the show. I've seen several of the spin-offs or franchises (whatever they are called) here and there on "The N" channel on Directv. That is where I caught Torrens playing Shane. My bad. I went back and looked at some of the old episodes on YouTube and realized that you are indeed correct, that he was not the original Shane. I guess when I recognized him on Degrassi TNG, I just assumed it was him all along. I'm 34 now...its been 21 years since we watched Degrassi in study hall! It is hard to remember a face from that long ago (on that tiny of a screen too! ;) ) LOL!...21 YEARS?! Really...OMG I feel old now!  :o

Torrens did play that character well and the casting agency did a good job. The original Shane would have easily grown up and resembled JT's character. I thought it worked on many levels.

Emma is the daughter's name. I'm a fan of the original Degrassi series (Jr High & High). Any fan of the show has to watch the final movie 'School's Out,' it really wraps up the series.

One of my favorite shows is scheduled for cancellation. "Endgame" on Showcase. Aside from TPB, Haven and The Drunk and on Drugs Happy Funtime Hour, this is one of the best shows on Showcase. It is filmed in Vancouver, and Vancouver actually plays Vancouver! Usually it is set in an American city.
There is a page for Endgame and Save Endgame on facebook.  There is a petition to save the show. The link is below. I am asking all my Org friends to please take a minute and sign the petition.

Thank you!  :)

It's a shame Endgame is being cancelled, they didn't really give it a chance. There's an interesting article here about what to do when your fave show gets dumped: http://www.boingboing.net/2010/05/06/how-to-really-save-y.html (http://www.boingboing.net/2010/05/06/how-to-really-save-y.html)

The trick is to get people to watch it now! It's all about the ratings.

Check out "The Notorious Newman Brothers"! One reviewer called it a cross between "Trailer Park Boys" and "Goodfellas". You'll enjoy it if you're into crude politically incorrect humour.

Download it for free at VODO: http://vodo.net/n3ES (http://vodo.net/n3ES)

Looks funny and right on the mark for TPB fans  :perv1:

The Org needs to re-invent itself as the Canadian Comedy Forum. There used to be so much enthusiasm and fun/creative people around here before the show ended. Such a shame to let all the goodwill this forum has across the world be lost.

Oh my goodness. I scrolled through this topic pretty quickly but I didn't see one mention of the Littlest Hobo. For those who are followers of mine on Twitter, you know I often post on ridiculous and hilarious situations that take place on that show. I don't think it was meant as a comedy by any means.  But the cheesy qualities will make you laugh your rear off.  One example of this is when Hobo jumped on the wing of a biplane opens the door and pulls out a first aid kit filled of dynamite. Then he books it across the field to dispose of the explosives. Just saying, it's pretty funny.

But if that's not your bag, perhaps you would enjoy Comedy Inc. It was a The Comedy Network show. They do have swearing which is refreshing for a cable TV show. Comedy Inc was put on by the CTV I believe. You can find some clips on YouTube.

One theme I have seen in this discussion that I fully agree with is The Kids in the Hall. For a sample search YouTube for "Cabbage for a Head" which is one of my favourite recurring characters.

Corner Gas is quite dry, it grew on me.  If you can manage to dig the vibe eventually you could really start to enjoy it.

Good luck on your search which ever direction you decide to travel in.

This last post made the most sense to me -- there's a ton of great Canadian comedy.  Do you prefer English Canadian or French?  I've got a whole essay in my book FIFTY SHADES OF TRAILER PARK BOYS about the tradition of Canadian comedy -- I personally think SCTV and TPB, but there is a TON of stuff out there!

Wow, Fishy -- that Hilarious House of Frightenstein opener has blasted me back to the wee years of my own childhood.  On the one hand, the title never really registered with me because I was so young whenever I saw this first, so I know I mistook it for legitimate horror, at least in my recollection.  I'm gonna pop off to Youtube and see if any eps or clips are posted.  I presume it's kind of a sitcom version of DARK SHADOWS?  Second, can you believe how obvious it is that Vincent Price is reading from a card above and to the side of the camera?  I mean, he put all that time into makeup, then didn't even bother to memorize 8 lines.  Too much of an "Old Pro" perhaps.  He uses every old trope in his bag of tricks, from the upturned emphasis at the end into the maniacal laugh and so forth.  It's pretty classic, but I can imagine him swatting away the script guy, which makes it even more classic!  Thanks for posting this, it's like getting into a time machine.
