I saw this article in The Star. Nothing earthshattering, but news nonetheless.

Just so we don't loose this article...

" SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT.–You wouldn't know if you saw him on television, but the real Jim Lahey barely drinks alcohol.

John Dunsworth, the Canadian actor who plays the character on the Showcase original series Trailer Park Boys, hardly touches the stuff. While Mr. Lahey is a drunk idiot, who is no stranger to slurring his words and stumbling, Dunsworth is anything but.

"I don't like to see people get pissed," he said in a telephone interview while cruising on his boat near Peggy's Cove, N.S. "It's a waste of their lives."

Dunsworth was apprehensive when he first started to play the role of Lahey, an ex-cop trailer park supervisor who, along with most of the TPB cast, is completely out of his mind.

"I've had a lot of thought," he said. "I had a little bit of a hard time being a poster boy for alcoholism."

However, the 62-year-old eventually came to grips with his character and what he believes is the true nature of the role.

"What I bring is enjoyment and laughter," he said.

Dunsworth, along with Patrick Roach, who plays Randy – Lahey's sidekick, assistant trailer park supervisor and special partner – are touring with Blood Sweat and Ears Wrestling. One of their stops included Sault Ste. Marie.

Dunsworth and Roach have been touring the country for several years, performing standup comedy and singing songs, mostly as their television characters.

In the series, the partners in crime, and sometimes in bed, stop at nothing to send the show's main characters – recidivist criminals Ricky, Julian and Bubbles – back to jail. However, Dunsworth couldn't be happier acting this type of role.

"I like playing a villain," he said. "I try to give them a bit of humanity." Throughout his career in theatre, film and television, Dunsworth has portrayed some seedy characters: Charles Manson, Shylock and an abusive husband, to name a few.

When Canadian writer and director Mike Clattenberg began making the 1998 movie One Last Shot, Dunsworth was cast as Jim Lahey, a drunk pet store owner.

The story – which was the first to introduce the characters Ricky and Julian – eventually became the TPB series. The drunk pet store owner became a drunk trailer park supervisor. Dunsworth jumped at the chance to play the Lahey character again.

The TPB franchise is not over yet. A television special is due out this fall and another movie sometime in 2009, he said. As for an eighth season, Dunsworth is left scratching his head.

"They don't tell us," he said."

Dunsworth deserves to be on Canada's Walk of Fame. I'll have to dig around for that thread with the link to the WOF site to see how to nominate someone.

I actually think most of the others could also be nominated becasue they have been acting for at least ten years, and that is their minimum requirement, but yeah, I agree John Dunsworth should be the one nominated

Ah! Thanks for the article! I wonder where that picture of Jim and Randy(Smokey?) is from! The special this fall, maybe?
