coffee pot cleaning?
« on: Jan 12, 2009, 06:06 PM »
so, just wondering if anyone out there has any tips on cleaning coffee pots (other than vinegar.....im out, and NOT going to the store tonight!)  i just made a pot of hot water to make hot chocolate with (hot chocolate + peppermint schnapps = teh YUM!!)  and i put a filter in the basket because i was high, and it got wet, so i left it....the stuff it caught was NARSTY....i have really good well water, but it's got a lot of lime n such in it evidently and has built up.....anyone got any home remedies?   brew rite used to make a really good product but the last few times ive looked, i didn't see it....vinegar works great too, but a) it stinks up the house and b) the aforementioned im out and not goin to the store, and will probably forget to buy vinegar the next at least five times i go to the store......

and, just to avoid silliness...im not talking about the actual pot, im talking about cleaning the innards of the coffee machine...

ps...i had to nuke my hot choc water....nuking water freaks me out a bit after having a glass of water i was heating for something or other pretty much explode all over my hand when i took it out of the microwave!
not a note~!

I've never tried anything besides the old vinegar and water coffee pot douching, but here are a few alternate methods...

    * a pot's worth of water and two denture tablets.
    * dissolve 1 oz of citric acid in 4 cups of hot water, then add 4 cups of cold water to the mixture.
    * 1 part baking soda to 4 parts of warm water
    * straight bleach(for the glass carafe ONLY)will instantly dissolve baked-on coffee.
Put a filter in your coffee maker, as usual.
Pour the mixture into the coffee maker where you would normally add water.
Turn the coffee maker on and let the mixture run completely through.
Discard the filter and mixture.
Let the coffee maker sit and cool for 15 minutes while it's off.
Rinse the coffee pot.
Repeat all of the above twice, but this time with plain cold water.
"It doesn't hurt to do something absolutely outrageous."

hrm, well thanks dirty dancin, but i have no denture tablets...and what would be considered "citric acid"?  i mean, i could add a sploosh of orange juice...but certainly that's not a whole oz of citric acid..........
