NHL 2008-2009 General Discussion

cool little article to get the new season's news underway

Surprise, it's Sidney Crosby with your tickets
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PITTSBURGH - Sidney Crosby delivered for the Pittsburgh Penguins-again.

This time, he did it off the ice. Crosby, coach Michel Therrien and eight other players hand carried season tickets to 35 randomly selected Penguins ticket holders on Wednesday.

Crosby, wearing a Penguins jersey and blue jeans, took tickets to Mount Lebanon resident David Disney, a season ticket holder since the Penguins' inception in 1967, and Karen and Guy Bradford of the Edgewood section of Pittsburgh.

"It's a pretty unique thing we do," Crosby said. "I think it's nice we do it."

None of the families were told in advance the players were coming.

Joining Crosby in knocking on front doors were Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Sergei Gonchar, Brooks Orpik, Maxime Talbot, Tyler Kennedy, Pascal Dupuis and Jeff Taffe.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to say thank you," Penguins president David Morehouse said.

The Penguins sold out all of their home games for the first time in team history last season while reaching the Stanley Cup final. They also expect another full-season sellout this season.

Just another reason why hockey is the best game on earth, and hockey players are the class of professional athletes.  I can't imagine Manny Ramirez doing this.

Tom Glavine was drafted by the Kings I think before he decided to pitch.

Lang acquired by the Habs.  Guess they don't think Sundin is coming.  Also retiring Patrick Roy's 33 this year against the Bruins.  Tickets be tough for that one.

What do you think of Lang coming to Mtl, SMG? I think it's obvious Sundin isn't coming. Not sure what to think of the Lang pickup.

It gives them incredible depth on the top 3 lines.  As much as I don't want to be the favs in the East, I think they have to be.  All depends on how Price does in goal.

We picked up Laraque too.  Some toughness.  can't wait for the hockey season.

He was one of my favorites with the Pens. But he thinks he is a hockey player now. He doesn't like to drop the gloves like he used to. Ruutu fought more than GL

Ruutu is with the Sens I think, so they may square off a few times this year.

Just having his size and threat is enough for me.  We haven't had that in a while.

Yeah, his reputation is enough for a lot of the tough guys on the other teams.

I went to the Pens practice today. It was pretty cool, they had a full scrimmage (3 15:00 periods) which ended in a 4-4 tie and went to a shootout which was won by Malkin. Malkin had 2 goals for the black and the dark lord Satan had 2 for the white. Sid is back to 100% for sure.

Sid was denied to end the game. They had Stall on Malkin's LW. Look out, he was flying around out there. I think he has something to prove.

We will get him back around playoff time! Plus this will give our young defensemen some more experience and responsibilities.

We are meeting next week to split up our season tickets. Go Pens!

They did a heart-wrenching memorial for LucBourdon before Vancouver started STOMPING Calgary tonight. It was ooooo so harsh. They were saying they had done the memorial service for our team twice before tonights so that the boys weren't too emotional to play. It looks like they played for Luc tonight...goin into the third on a power play right now, up 3-0. Nice!

Sad news

New York Ranger prospect Alexei Cherepanov collapsed on the bench during Omsk's Kontinental Hockey League game on Monday and died a short time later.

Omsk head coach Wayne Fleming said Cherepanov collapsed on the bench during the third period of the game and did not see anything that happened on the ice that may have contributed to it. He also said medical authorities tried to get Cherepanov's heart beating again after it had stopped.

"They tried to get his heart started again but they couldn't," he explained.

Sources in Russia tell TSN that the ambulance that is normally at all games had already departed and had to be called back.

It is not clear exactly how long it took for Cherepanov to be transported from the rink to the hospital but one source in the arena told TSN it was, "probably 15 or 20 minutes."

There are also questions as to whether defibrillators at the arena were in good working order, though no further details are available.

"We are extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Alexei," said New York Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather in a statement. "On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man, with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future."

Cherepanov was drafted 17th overall by the Rangers in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

"He was a great kid," Cherepanov's agent Jay Grossman told TSN. "He had a great smile and was an outstanding player with a great future on and off the ice. It's both shocking and devastating news for all of us. "

He had seven goals and 12 points in 14 games played this season in KHL, including the first goal in Monday's game. Cherepanov played 106 games during his career in the KHL/RSL (Russian Super League), all with Avangard Omsk and scored 40 goals with 29 assists over that span.

He set the RSL record for goals by a rookie with 18, beating the previous mark held by Pavel Bure (17 goals), during the 2006-07 season. His 29 points in his rookie campaign was more than Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk scored during their first initial RSL seasons.

Cherepanov also helped lead Russia to a Bronze Medal at the World Junior Championships in 2008, scoring three goals and adding three assists with a plus-three rating over his six games at the tournament.

still have a ways to go to catch up to the Habs, but they're doing great with the cards they were dealt by management.

Here's an AMAZING link.

http://www.motherpucker.ca/free-streaming-nhl-hockey/

VIDEO Streams of basically any hockey game each night. GREAT quality too. Almost like watching it on TV. I have it stretched out on my 36" LCD and it looks GREAT. If you have a good internet connection, no stalling either.

Great site to have if your favorite team isn't on TV or if you just wanna watch a hockey game that doesn't happen to be on TV.

After I get off at midnight on weekdays I usually watch the end of the late game. I'm watching Chicago vs. San Jose now. Chicago lost D-man Aaron Johnson and Khabibulin within' a 5 minute span during the second period. Huge loss for the Hawks. No news on the injuries yet though. Johnson is believed to be a right arm injury and Khabibulin's possibly lower body.

GO HABS. Good win tonight against the Red Wings!

There's another site with all sports on it

http://atdhe.net/

even soccer for the Euros

And yes Matty, that was a huge win for the Habs.  Figured it was gonna be lopsided in favor of Detroit, but Carey P stood on his head.
