2008 Beijing Summer Olympics
« on: Aug 07, 2008, 10:49 PM »
08.08.08

With the Olympics about to get underway, I thought it would be handy to have a topic to discuss the games or even the politics behind them. Which events are your favourite to watch? Who are your favourite atheletes? Which country is going to dominate? Will Canada finally win the gold in men's basketball? :P

Personally, I'm not a huge sports fan, but I do like to watch some of the events (not religiously, but more often than I would watch sports normally).
With all the controversy surrounding these games, I really have a strong feeling that something huge & bad is going to happen; but it could just be because of all the protests leading up to the games giving me an uneasy feeling (kind of like how there was all that build-up to the millenium & nothing really happened).

Anyway, I hope we can have some friendly Olympic discussion!

I'm really only interested in watching one sport and that is hockey.  Ice hockey as it were.  It's our game and we actually go the through the formal channel of winning whatever championship I am happy.  I don't give a damn about any sport in the summer Olympics, I find most of them silly.  I'd like to see Canada do well, but I don't get the same thrill when Canada wins the ribbon twirling contest, or a soccer game like I do when we win in hockey.

I do like watching volleyball because I played that as well, but I won't get upset if the Canadian team shits the bed.

I'd like to see the Olympics banned they are annoying and interrupt proper television :)

That being said I realize a lot of people like the Olympics, so ignore this and carry on getting excited about you silly little games, and let's have a good discussion :)

I'm not much of a sports fan either.  I do like winter Olympics, though!
I hope all that enjoy the games get their fill.  And go Canada!!
As far as the politics and the protesting, I can sympathize with that.  I am for boycotting anything made in China, just to protest the Chinese government. For instance, the one child law, human rights, or lack of them, the culling of all cats in Beijing.

08.08.08 @ 8.08pm Beijing time when the opening ceremonies officially started.

Freaks.

I like watching the sprints, some swimming, all Canadians, baseball, boxing and a little basketball.

Canada is expected to get around 15-17 medals if all works out well.  Would be our best summer games ever.  Building towards 2010.

Imagine it could be in Toronto right now if Mayor David Miller wasn't a racist.

I swear they are making up some of these countries up. I should read my world atlas a bit more.

If they introduced motorsport into the Olympics, I might just watch! But I guess that is going against the ancient Greek spirit of the games. Mind you, if they were following that to the letter, the atheletes would be naked...

I use to watch the Olympics when I was younger..now, not so much. Between the judge's decisions and the drug scandals, I always feel it's tainted. I too have an uneasy feeling concerning the games. Also I do not care for the Chinese government and their rules concerning just about everything..from people's rights to their treatment of animals. I do however support the honest atheletes and their dedication to their respective sports ;)

Athletes are cool. China can suck it. Except for Tibet, the monks, the Shaolin priests, Dalai Lama, hot chinese girls and David Carradine. Other than them, China can fuck off. and if my country wasn't in debt to them for trillions of dollars...why I'd...I'd...ugh.  :-s

Just watched the last half hour of the opening ceremonies. Pretty amazing. I can't even begin to figure out what it cost. The lighting of the flame was cool too.

That said I prefer the Winter Olymplcs to the Summer Olympics.

Two relatives of the U.S. Men's volleyball team were attacked by a knife-wielding Chinese man at a tourist site in Beijing. One was killed and the other was injured, the Chinese man committed suicide by throwing himself off a second story of the Drum Tower site.

I can't remember, did Canada send anyone to the Olympics this year?

(Yes, I know the athletes work their asses off to get where they are, I just wish their efforts would be rewarded)

The Olympics is kinda lame. Canadians are too cool to win stuff at the Olympics.

Just keep repeating that and everything will be fine.

As of this morning, Canada has 2 medals, gold & bronze both in women's wrestling (but for different weight class divisions, I think).

Edit: Make that 3 medals, we received a sliver in rowing!

The fucking announcers in the US make me want to do an Elvis on the TV set.

Perky Perky Perky, they never ever ever shut up and every fucking athlete has a feel good or
against all odds or overcoming tragedy story. Can't anyone be normal?

I'd love to get a feed from the CBC and see how your coverage is.
