My First Donair
« on: Jul 30, 2008, 10:20 AM »
I was in Edmonton last week on a business trip, and the highlight of that trip was eating a donair for the first time.  I LOVE DONAIRS!!!  Granted it wasn't from KOD, but was from Marco's Famous Donairs (that's all they had on the campus of U of A, where I was).  I ate one every day for lunch.  Way cool!  (For those of you who aren't aware, you can't get donairs in the US.)

Other highlights include being able to watch the boys on actual live TV, uncensored.  I don't know if it was watching it on a small TV vs. my big screen or what, but it had a totally different look.  The downside of course was all the commercials.  Also got to visit an actual head shop.  Haven't seen one of those in the US since I was in college many years ago.

Sounds like you enjoyed your visit to the North.  I don't know about Donairs that aren't on the East Coast.  Maybe they're exported, but as long as you liked them that's all that matters.

There's a whole thread on donairs here too.

I don't (didn't?) eat meat until I recently ate a cheese pizza that had a slice of doniar secretly hidden under the molten mozzarella. It was good.

A bit like that pepperoni that was hiding under the other pizza slice... whoopsy!

I resited the temptation to buy a pre-packaged one from Sobey's today. Must have a KOD donair this weekend.

Can get it rolled up, open faced and can get sauce in a container at most shops if you are planning to transport it and consume it later.  At some point in your life you should really venture to Robert's Pizza, which is near the K.O.D. where we went to take pictures around back with the orgsters (Spring 2006?).  One of my favourites is Tony's on Robie Street in Halifax and on the north-west corner of the Halifax Commons.  The best time to get donairs is when they are busy, otherwise the meat is a bit nasty IMO.

That's funny.  I thought donair's were just another "rickyism".  They remind me of gyro

I need to get up there and see all this stuff in real life.  It would be awesome.  Do you ever happen to see any of the characters  :julian:  :bubs:  :ricky: around town like regular people?

Is the LC for real also?

LC stands for Liquor Commission or Nova Scota Liquor Commission (NSLC)

Its a real thing. Basically the relevance from what I've heard is that you cant buy liquor in Nova Scotia at a privately owned business, it has to be provincially regulated.
Maybe I'm wrong though.

I've had many donairs here in Vancouver. I enjoy them, I dont understand why everyone thinks its shit out west. The place I go to has Halifax style ones as well as others.
I laughed when I read someone said they ship donairs out from NS to the rest of canada. Pretty sure thats totally wrong, there's been donairs for hundreds of years before there was a Canada.
Fuck off, I've got work to do.

There's more than just lamb.
The most popular kinds are beef and chicken.
I believe there are vegetarian types as well which are curried potatoes.
Makes me think of samosas... :perv1: :ricky:

For it to be a donair it has to have donair meat in it.  That can be made of lamb or beef and seasoned.  Even if it is made of lamb, it doesn't really taste like it, it is a unique taste.  I've seen some shops sell chicken donairs, but really there is no such thing as a chicken donair, since it is not donair meat.  Chicken shawarmas are big here in Ottawa.

Donairs do not equal Gyros.  What makes the donair is the sauce.  If you put tzatiki sauce on that shit you're eating greek.  Throw some sweet garlic sauce and boom, you're in a donair, east coast style.

My moms came up from NB with about 5 pounds of donair meat from my new fav spot.  Ate one Friday, one Saturday and a monster mother fucker yesterday.  Still waiting for the gut rot to come.

The east coast donair is made with sweet garlic sauce.
The other kinds of donairs, like the ones out here, I guess would be considered gyros.
I've seen them use tzatiki, hot sauce or hummus.

Thanks for the answer about the L.C.  heavymetal

Over by my place we have the L.T. = "Liquor Town"  and I'm a regular.  The image of  :julian: always having his drink is hilarious.  I can't remember that episode where when they crash by the farm and roll the vehicle over the  :julian: gets out with his glass full.  Any one remember?

I would really like to make it up to Canada to try an original donair and meet some of you in the area.  That woud rock.  In the mean time I'll check out http://www.parthenongyros.com/
