Tiggy's Cultural Tour of Amsterdam
« on: Jun 02, 2008, 06:24 PM »
Having just returned from my Europe trip, I thought I'd share some highlights. I thought of you all as I stumbled, I mean, strolled down the leafy waterside streets of Amsterdam and took a few pictures to share with you.

To start the day, a bit of shopping...

Cock rings - they'd be a bargain at at twice the price!

Take home some lovely tulip seeds! Or some other stuff.

A bit of window shopping! I don't fancy those much.

Now time for a bit of book learning at the local "Higher" Education College...

This college library was interesting.

Learning lots about horbiculture.

Now time for lunch at the local coffee shop. Those cakes tasted funny.

Time to take in the sites...

Hmm, is that Randy's new bicycle, complete with Swish attachment? Nice.

Just time to watch a top theatrical show. Better than Broadway! And the things they can do with bananas.

Amsterdam is fun!

I also have about 500,000 photos of medieval churches and Viking runes stones, but I think I'll keep those to myself.

Basil Fawlty: Oh dear, what happened? Did you get entangled in the eiderdown again? Not enough cream in your eclair? Hmm? Or did you have to talk to all your friends for so long that you didn't have time to perm your ears?

I love learning. Thanks to Tiggy, I now understand what Van Hagar were singing about...

Shinin' red and blue light
A little thick in the bottom
But still lookin' alright, yeah!"

Thanks guys, glad to be of service!

And I've also learnt something else - always shampoo, condition and brush your hair before having your picture taken (I had been living rough in a camper van for a week by this point!)

I noticed a lot of men looking at my t-shirt while wandering the Red Light district - there must be a lot of TPB fans in Holland!

I like Belguim. But we went to Denmark instead.  :-s

On a serious (?) note, Amsterdam may appear fucked up, but it is a pretty good place to hang out. On a previous trip, I hung out at one of greasiest bars in town (it had a security buzzer on the front door and was full of stoned, gun-packing Africans playing dominoes) - one of the best nights out ever!

The Red Light district isn't nearly as bad as Bangkok's (I seem to have visited most of the world's greasiest areas!) It's a more honest way of dealing with prostitution and sex. There are as many curious tourists (even families with kids) wandering around as well as dirty old men and drunken stag parties. The sex shops are actually a lot of fun to look around, there's all sorts of things you wouldn't know quite what to do with! The local council are trying to get rid of the parlours and coffee shops - the Dutch have been 'window shopping' and smoking dope for over 500 years so why stop now?

Compared to booze-fuelled central London, Amsterdam was pretty laid back, reasonably safe to walk around at night and the (better) coffee shops were chilled, beautifully decorated and nice places to hang out, even if you don't smoke (the coffee was really good!) I never saw any trouble or fighting. Although one guy who must have been hitting the Purple Haze a bit hard passed out flat on his face when he tried to leave, boy was he embarrassed when he came round! The only idiot in town was me, after an evening sampling 11.3% Trappist ale...

That a Dutch person can walk into a smart and modern store like Sensi Seeds, peruse the range of specialty seeds and take them home to grow them seemed rather respectable. No hanging around dark alleys buying crappy mall dope and being offered all kinds of terrible shit like cocaine. No wonder the Dutch don't seem all that bothered about smoking the stuff, it's not seen as a big deal...

Great pics Tig.  :bigleaf: :gethigh: :guinness:

What you guys have been saying just triggers something that Bubbles Said in season Two about amsterdam (can't remember the ep right now) but he referred for it being legal to buy dope and smoke it right in the resteraunts. Now Seeing this Really supports that statement.

I also remember having a teacher talking about the red light districts of amsterdam. I think that is the best way to deal with what is usually unregulated.

I just remembered another weird thing when I was at the coffee shop. I ordered two coffees (honestly, it was coffee) and it came to EU 4.20! As I grabbed my wallet, I looked at the time and it was 4:20pm! Bizarre.
