I don't know how to drive a car and I walk around all the time down here in the USA.  Mind you my city isn't huge, about 300,000 in the mountains- but as a (generally considered cute and usually over/underdressed) woman I've walked unescorted in this town for 20 years and the worst to ever happen to me is bums asking for change.   Not all US cities are nightmares though I admit the added gun restrictions must make Canada a relative comfort.  Mind you, I've had some bad times out in the countryside here (rednecks are scary. Go rent "Deliverance", it's not lying.  They're really that scary) -but the city is just ducky.  -I admit though that I may not look like an easy target to some people since I'm sortof a freak.

dvs, i bet you wouldn't do the same in scarborough. Hamilton is safe at night, but there are so many creepers walking around, you get more freaked out rather than being physically harmed.
it's more than just a walkie.

Yea well I'm in harmless Etobicoke It's still reassuring though to be able to walk home at night with all the stuff you see on the news about crimes and stuff

I feel totaly safe walking down the streets of Canada. Although I did have an experience that rattled me a bit in Gastown in Vancouver. It was close to last call and I noticed a man accross the street looking at me. I looked again and he was walking right along with me still on the other side. I ducked into a bar ( where all the big rock bands would play in the 80's & 90's...the pump something or other???) and told the bouncer if the guy outside the window comes in here it means he's following me and I'll need help. The door opened and there was the guy. I yelled "why are you following me! you know you are!" Then the bouncer took over, took care of my dirty work, and walked me to my parking spot.

I think that these acts of crime can happen anywhere you go. Some places you are more apt to run into crime, but sadly in this day and age there are fucked up people everywhere.

Ahh the Town Pump!!! Many fond memories of that place from the late 80's and early 90's!  A young woman was shot out front of there last year trying to protect a stranger from being beaten up!!
Being on the edge of Canadas seediest neighbourhood (Downtown East Side) it can be a bit intimidating at 3 am. The trick is to not look like a victim. Walk tall and be bold and friendly (easy to say for a well built young man)!
