Fires

As some of you may already know, we are having horrific wildfires here in San Diego County.  There have been over 100,000 acres burned, one person has died, many homes have been lost and thousands evacuated.  The dry Santa Ana winds that are driving these fires aren't expected to die down until Wednesday.  I am fortunately not in the path of any current fires, and all of my family are currently safe as well.

The picture I have included is from a fire well to the east of me and is burning in a south-easterly direction.

Please spare a good thought for those affected...

I saw the news footage on CNN yesterday and was hoping that none of our members were in the path of those devastating fires. Glad you're safe RS 8) Let's hope for some rain and calmer winds.

When I think of Malibu I think of entitlement and celebrity.  Am I a bad person for not really feeling bad that Malibu is on fire?  Of course any loss of life is regrettable as with any natural disaster.  I also wonder if there were regulations for that area against clearing brush or cutting trees down.  In some cases property owners and the government are banned from cutting away underbrush that fuels fires.  Environmental groups get these type of laws passed and then it actually allows fires to spread faster and farther.    Anyways I don't really feel that bad that rich out of touch peoples homes could burn down.  Sorry.

I'll amend that.  I feel bad for the regular folks.  I do not feel bad for the people that checked into the Beverly-Wilshire to escape the fire.  I hope their bundles of cash burn in their faulty fire-proof safes.

Edit:  I also welcome the end-times.  Even though they aren't coming until 2012.

Look at it this way...If your house burns down today, should the immigrant that bags your groceries not feel bad because you are so rich?  Rich and poor...subjective terms really.  Your post sounds more like petty jealousy to me.  Sure those folks in Malibu are more likely than not to have insurance, but the most valuable things they will lose, photographs, etc. can't be replaced.

I feel for anybody who lost anything due to the fires.  Regardless of if you are a "star" or a "nobody" you worked for what ya have / had.  If people lost friends / family I feel even more for them as in a situation like that it doesn matter how much / little money you've got or how ya got it.  Guess that's just me.

There are others to consider. People who are not rich will lose jobs, animals will be killed, other factors are involved other than "get the rich guy" if you welcome the end times well go for it,

How many jobs will be generated rebuilding all the burned houses?  Its certainly keeping the firefighters in business too!  There are some plants that can only reseed after a fire, so I'd expect life to flourish in the wake of it.  Animals will be killed sure but lots will run away too.

Its not so much get the rich guy as give the rich guy a scare.  I don't know, I just don't feel sorry for people who's mansions burn down thats all.

Sadly, many of the folks affected down here live in the back country and are of low to moderate income.  I've seen accounts of people not being able to save their pets or any of their valuables, literally having to evacuate with what they have on their backs because the fire is spreading so quickly.  After the Cedar Fire in 2003, which until this fire complex was the most destructive fire in California, many of the houses weren't rebuilt as the owners weren't able to afford insurance and weren't eligible for FEMA money.  The Witch Fire is even burning in areas that had burned in the Cedar Fire, so many people after four years are again having to go through the ordeal of evacuating and not knowing if their homes will be there tomorrow.

It's a very eerie feeling to go out in my front yard and see a wall of smoke to the north and one to the south and have the sky above perfectly clear.  They are predicting that if the winds don't abate tonight that the northern branch of the Witch fire will probably reach the Pacific by the morning.

O MY FUCK this is so crazy...that fire...ITS JUST AWFUL. What a terrible loss for these poor people. More average folks than not are being effected. I was just watching on the news, one guy said the fire was indescribably massive, and sounded like a freighttrain coming right for him.
Im so glad you're OK too, RS.

I'm not sure how to even react to that article Stonemaster.  It's like they were trying to make us feel sympathetic and not sympathetic at the same time.  I don't think it really compares to Nawlins.

We had fires threaten our home back when I was a kid, but we were too stupid to evacuate.  Just sat back and watched the smoke.  I'd say they were within a half kilometre at one point.  That's not far.

I saw an preview of ET or something and they were interviewing the celebs and Tanya Tucker was worried about all her stage costumes and jewelry.  Poor rhinestone studded jackets.

I can't understand why the combined wealth of Mel Gibson and David Geffin can't rent like 20 or 30 of those planes that drop water from all across the country and put the fire out in much less time.  The celebrities are safe in the knowledge that their houses will be saved because of "who they are" and will be able to afford extra measures as well.  You know that public resources are going to be diverted from saving more houses when the bigger houses start burning.

No - we don't know that. That is not a statement of fact ... it is speculation for which there is no past factual basis.

This was written in 1996, I thought it might give people some historical perspective on how many extreme wildfires Malibu has had since the 1930's.  It make me wonder why people would continue to build more and more densely in such a fire-prone area.

This aint no NO but this is not good. explaining that nature takes care of things naturally is old news and non applicable in this day and age. Man has altered nature and man will continue to pay for these mistakes and human beings all of us better wake up cause people will die needlessly through n action, apathy or stupidity (say what George B). I just dont think you have a position that merits a defense, well maybe on Fox News
