The only time i heard our national athem in school was when we learned everything about the text and the music during the music-class. And I can tell you, noone stood up. :)

Every morning OCanada is played over the PA system in Canadian schools.  I don't think they say the Lord's prayer anymore but they used to.

if you don't respect this country (or whatever country) then move the fuck out!

Even if it was for religious reasons, you respect the country where you live or you get out of it.

As if you can just move to whatever country you want to ...

There's no way I could even begin to count the number of times ... I beat up the younger kids.

You must be so proud of yourself.

Wow... every morning... that wouldn't be possible in germany!
No kid would stand up every morning for our anthem! Never!
But that's something that has to do with our history and stuff...

But back to topic... even if this kid doesn't stand up for the anthem... is that really a reason to beat the sh*t out of him? I don't think so...

When I was in Highschool , they  only played the NA (and God Save The Queen) before Assemblies . My sister was the only person in the school who wouldn't stand. We we're raised to question authority , by an Anarchistic Dad. I was proud of my sister , for having the courage to stand up ( or sit in this case) for her convictions.

I only heard it at hockey games.  I would have loved to have heard God Save The Queen, The Sex Pistols rock!

I don't remember the national anthem being played in grade school...but then again I went to school in Quebec....national anthem not so big in some parts there.

In grade six I had a teacher who was a devout Christian. She wasn't very old but wore theses shapeless sack dresses and sensible shoes...badly out of date hairstyle...anyways, she made us recite the Lords prayer every morning until some of the students complained to their parents.
She had to stop, but oooh was she bitter about it. The rest of the school year was hell with this christian scorned!

Its no fucking wonder that teachers have lost control of their classrooms!

They try to put a stop to attention seeking - problematic behavior immediatley... and they get nailed for it!  As far as I am concerned ... suspend the kid and give the teacher a raise for being proactive.  When I was a kid if I never stood at a hockey game for the national anthem my dad would have nailed me to a friggin tree until I learned the words ... in 5 different lauguages!  And you know what ... I can sing the anthem in english and french, I actually sing them during hockey games, and am usually the first one to stand and the last one to sit back down... why??? ..... because I believe it is the proper thing to do.  Where are this little brats parents in all this???

Hell if I were that teacher .... I would march myself over to the kids parents place and give them a lesson real quick lesson in teaching a kid respect and self disipline!  If its a political issue ... good for him, but I doubt it .... he is too young to know the difference, if its a religious issue.... leave the room, and any other reason.... get your lazy ass up off that chair, cuz I dont wanna be supporting him on welfare in 10 years.

Either way ... the kid shouldnt have been 'roughed up' on the bus.  Words exchanged, sure... but physical altercations, no.  But you gotta give those kids some credit for knowing the difference between what is acceptable and what is not.

Or prostitution.

I used to have to stand at attention for the German national anthem every day that I got caught outside at 4:30 or 5:00 or whenever they decided it was time to do it.  Then, stand some more - only this time with a salute in the general direction of a flag - while they played the American national anthem.  Was terrible on snow days.

A person can still respect their country AND choose to not participate in an arbitrary display of patriotism . Simply standing or not standing , does not determine weather one loves their country or not.....

If I were to hear someone exclaiming that, under fear of violence , one should stand and salute , visions of North Korea , China , and Nazi Germany come to mind......

I will stand because I choose to , not because I fear the retributions for not standing....

I wonder how many people that are coming down on this little turd wear their ball hats during the anthem?

Choosing to remain seated during our NA is a show of disrespect to your fellow citizens.  If you do not expect that there will be consequences that flow from disrespecting other people then you truly deserve everything that happens to you afterward. Standing is a symbolic gesture that is part of a social ritual.  Sure it is arbitrary, but if you are not down with your society's rituals then maybe it is time to start looking for a new society or doing something constructive to change it. Stupid little "protests" like this are NOT constructive. I bet that this kid goes on to become an active member of the Anti-Poverty Committee (people from Vancouver will get the reference) or a professional protester for one of the many other nutjob fringe groups out there.

There are many battles you can choose to "rebel" against but this is a stupid battle to pick. You're not accomplishing anything, you're trying to be cool. But you're not. YOU SUCK. stand the fuck up.

My schools didn't play the National Anthem, in grade school we had the Pledge Of Allegiance[everyone stood up] However during Hockey games at MSG and at the Nassau Coliseum every one stood..same for Yankee games at Yankee Stadium and Met games at Shea. I even saw moms and dads pick up the kids and hold them on their shoulders. After 9/11 instead of the seventh inning stretch there was anthems played and again every one I saw stood..I personally stand up all the time it's played..but that's just me, and that's my 2 cents worth on this topic :)

I went to a catholic grade school. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and prayers every morning and afternoon. In May we also had to say the rosary every day after lunch

In my Highschool You were made to stand still if you were caught in the halls during the announcements and the national anthem. Literally Teachers would come out in the hall to enforce this and the only time you got away with it is if there wasn't a teacher present.

Right on.
If I'm a good citizen, pay my taxes and put up with the idiocy that is our political system, I'll stand on my fucking head during any song or prayer if I want to. If I didn't appreciate this right I would, indeed, find an oppressed, police state to move to where I would be forced to do what religious fanatics and fascists forced me to do.

I stand and place my hand on my heart, but do not expect anyone else to if they, for any reason, refuse to.

It's called freedom, and that includes freedom from religious or "patriotic" pressure.

God, how I love our countries!  :)

Patriotism scares me....especially when it's used as a thin disguise for "nationalism".
