Sitting during the National Anthem?

Hometown news.  This teacher is one of the good ones still left.  He's coached sports his whole life and there isn't a student that didn't like him.  Rumor is MVHS's beloved Mr.C is under fire of suspension thanks to trying to get an unwilling student to stand for "O Canada", and not allowing the student in the classroom after his attempts failed.

N.B. teacher suspended in national-anthem flap *the globe and mail*

Miramichi, N.B. -- A New Brunswick teacher has been suspended after sending a student to the principal's office for refusing to stand during the Canadian anthem.
Eric Cameron, a Grade 9 teacher at Miramichi Valley High School, was disciplined after the incident last Thursday.
The superintendent of District 16 school board has declined comment, citing privacy issues.
The student who wouldn't stand was roughed up after the incident by other students on a school bus. He wasn't seriously hurt.
Superintendent Randall Hansen of Miramichi Regional Police says officers have spoken to a number of witnesses, but no charges have been laid.

I for one would be one of the guys kicking his ass on the bus if I was there.

He was, on the school bus.

And this wasn't for religious reasons either.  There are several religions in the area where the students will just step outside of the class during the anthem.

I read the story in the paper and heard it on the news.  It's ridiculous.  This is Canada - the country the student is living in - and he should stand for the national anthem.  We are a very polite country.  When we are in other countries we pay them the respect of standing for their national anthems for sports events, etc.  The details weren't reported (the reason the student refused to stand, whether he was from Canada or another country, but in my mind the teacher was 100% right for sending him to the principal.  I voted no, and would have voted to kick his ass if I thought it was acceptable.  I know the teacher is suspended, which is ridiculous, but if he loses his job, I think there will be a real uproar, and rightly so.

I dunno about beating him but I woule definately have said something to him.  FWIW, I was at a NASCAR race a few years back in Virginia and during the anthem one dood didn't stand up and just kept drinkin his beer as it was sung.  Someone asked him to get up and show respect for his country - he told them to fuck off and that America sucks.  So everybody goes on standing there while the anthem is being sung after this goes down.  Once the anthem is done four guys start beating the CRAP outta dood who didn't stand .  I swear to god.  Worked out good for me as security came and broke it up and took all five guys away and I got more room on the bench seat for my fat ass lol.  Moral - respect the anthem or pay!

Found some more info on it.  Mr C is the teacher, PGM is the principal, RW I don't know, and I assume KB is from the district.

Quote
I have a couple of teachers in my family working in the district and I heard the story about Mr. C from them--- the child, who stood for O Canada every morning this year, refused to stand. Mr. C told him to stand or go to the office. It was the kid's choice. He chose to go to the office. Later, Mr. C got called down, Peggy Gorman Mitchell and Richard Walsh asked Mr. C if he was ready to have the student back in the class room. Mr. C. said that he was more than willing to have the student as long as he apologized to him and his fellow students. The student refused to apologize. A few days later when Mr. C went to work, Kathy Baldwin was there waiting for him, and escorted him off the property of MVHS.

That's the word on the school grounds amongst the teachers.

I think that someone who doesn't stand for the national anthem is simply looking for attention and wants someone to ask him why? So, stupid, for the sake of a couple of minutes, in if you don't respect this country (or whatever country) then move the fuck out! No sense in the rest of us wasting our tax dollars on your medicare or freedom.

When the kids say the pledge every day, I say it along with them.  Except for one minor change; I stay silent during the "under God" phrase.  I've never really felt like it belonged and was surprised to learn that it was added in the 40's, its not part of the original "pledge".  As far as not standing during the anthem, KC nailed it.  Attention seeking behavior.

Even if it was for religious reasons, you respect the country where you live or you get out of it.

I've been to hockey games in Florida and I stood for the Star Spangled Banner. It's all about respect.
The teacher did the right thing by disciplining the kid and sending him to the Principal's office instead of chewing him out or throwing a chalkboard eraser at him. (I got really used to ducking in High School)

I am in agreement with Fishy and Cappy. I have been to many countries while I was in the U.S. Navy. Some countries (like Kenya) play their national anthem before a movie starts. I always stood for their National Anthem out of respect. When I was on a foreign military base and they played their anthem at the beginning or the end of the work day I always stood. If I was in uniform I would salute their flag. I also stand for the American & Canadian National anthem at a Seattle Mariner/Toronto Blue Jays baseball game. Not very hard to do IMHO.

This is my old health/phys ed teacher btw.

I read that he said he was tired and didn't want to stand today.  He had stood every other day of the year.

The story was on the CTV news at 6 down east and I saw the story.  The school district has sent Mr. C home on "home duty" with full pay, saying it's for something else.  Unreal.

Someone started a facebook group for him, Support Mr. C, and in a day and a half 800 former students have joined and they have a petition for him, and over 200 wall posts, with a vast majority in favour of the teacher.

Well if he didn't stand because he was tired then I think he was being an attention seeking little shit.

If he didn't stand for political reasons then I would have supported the kid.

Either way the teacher should not be punished for this incident in any way.

I agree  :) There are plenty of reasons why in this apathetic political environment someone would want to take a stand in a potentially provocative way. As long as no side resorts to violence as has been frequently advocated in this thread.

I hope this doesnt offend anyone cos it's certainly not meant to.

Violence on the bus doesn't count.  There's no way I could even begin to count the number of times I got punched in the arm on the bus.  Or how many times I beat up the younger kids.  It's like a rite of passage.  Just like when the girl with the big boobs and tight tops lets you sit with her and pretend to like her so you can cop a feel.

I voted 'yes', but I had our national anthem in mind. I love my country and I can be as unpleasantly nationalistic as the next man/woman when the England football team are playing.  But while I wish Liz and Phil no ill-will personally, I don't particularly want the royal family to 'long reign o'r us.' Also, the lyrics of our national anthem are bloody awful-offensive, imperialist triumphalism-hardly apt for a multi-cultural country.

Example:

'Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!'

You could forgive the average Scot for refusing to happily stand up and belt out that verse

Guess it's different for Canadians....

Do you guys sing the national anthem at school?

For this case it seems that the child/youth in question was just being a lazy little ass. Send him to the office and that should have been the end of it.

I have no problem on the other hand with someone refusing to sing their National Anthem as a political protest.
