Whatever anyone does,
don't ever switch to Aliant Cable. Very low quality and shitty digital channels.
Aliant phone is probably one of the best in NS. (Rogers is terrible)
I prefer Eastlink cable though. Awesome channels and it barely ever goes pixely or fucky... Aliant does it at least once every few minutes... and I am dead serious. It may just be our line but we have had them come to fix it and he said it was fixed but it still didn't work.
I think Eastlink would be the way to go for sure.

Thanks Matt!  I'm going Eastlink but now I may be picking up the FTA "hobby" I just might go with a "basic" cable package ;).

the basic Eastlink cable package I find the best actually. If you start getting free sattelite from the US you may not get some of the Canadian Channels... like SHITCASE!
My mom has her shitty Aliant cable and I have Eastlink in my room. Kind of funny how that ended up happening but basically I have free legal cable in my room, hahaha.

Just ordered a Viewsat Ultra from DSSliquidators.com, $200 shipped, no card required.  Just a memory stick.  Will update further when I get it hooked up.

Yeah its my first.  My brother in law has the same one and he said there's no problems with it.  I'm excited like a little schoolgirl, minus the sexy plaid skirt and knee high socks.

Find a good forum and do a little reading first. i know you got him but its better to get acclimated before you get it. I would recommend fta-newbies.net great site and great people with lots of info, they got a good off topic section as well. check it out.

Are the dishes line of sight or do they move.  Which direction do they need to point if they are LOS.

You just plug in the wire from the Bell Express Vu and it should be good to go.  You can get ones that move if you want Dish Network and BEV or Star choice or whatever
I'm just going for Bell

LOS depending on you're setup. Some into the true FTA have motor driven dishes but the majority are fixed. Direction depends on your location and the satellite you're aiming at. Free PPVs and Porn awesome, o yea this "hobby' is how I discovered TPB a great day in my life.

They stay in one spot.

The atmegas were the way to go for many years, but it looks like FTA boxes are winning the war because you can pull in bev and dish.

Reprogramming atmegas really isn't that hard and to be honest with you, that was the point.  If you enjoy "tinkering" you do it, other wise you are just stealing tv...

I used to be right into it for many years, but it started getting really heavy and I got out.

The site with the most info is sattech.ca, but you have to read or you'll get the boot really quick.  They don't take kindly to people asking a million questions that have been asked a million times already...

no Starchoice or Directtv either, Dishnet is a go though same encrytion system as Bell. Alot of people do both. More choice for movie channels. PPVs are about the same. Doing both is really easy.

Owning FTA boxes is legal. Altering them is technically illegal. The other testing methods require atmegas, card fixing reqiure using Dish or Bell equipment which is even more illegal. Not that I care, used to fix Direct TV cards myself back in the day but some would be concerned.

Please let me know how you make out with the Ultra SMG.  I've got an Expressvu dish hanging off the side of my house aimed @ the BEV bird right now just waiting for some kind of FTA box to be attached to it ;).
