Toothache from grinding I think
« on: Mar 16, 2007, 02:41 PM »
I need help.  I have a tooth that's fucking killing me.  I think I was grinding the other night and the dentist is closed until monday.  I'm taking extra strength advil, using orajel, and brushing with sensodyne.  I even bought a $35 mouth guard to sleep with but I fucking spit it out 10 times last night.

Anyone know something else I could do?  Can't put any pressure on it at all.  I am 99% sure it's not a cavity cause I just had xrays done in January and they didn't show anything.

At the Walmart, in the toothbrush isle, they have WAX.  Some people buy this wax to fill holes in their teeth.  You need to buy the wax and use it to put a little "armor" around the tooth.  Make a little wax cap.  It will adhere to the tooth and keep you from being able to grind on it so badly.

Screw the Advil.  You need to find something stronger.  I always have a hydrocone handy just for such times.

I still got some pain meds that I used for my knee surgery.  I'll try those before bed and look for the wax tomorrow.

Thanks SQ

AW!
That sucks.
Im a grinder, I wear a mouthguard too, its one from the dentist, so its molded to your mouth and won't come out when you sleep.
You're sure its not something stuck in your gums, like wayyy up in there. Also happened to me, went to the dentist cause it was o so painful, I couldn't put any pressure on it, or chew, or anything. Well anyway it was a popcorn kernal. Stuck way up in my gum..she dug it out with floss.
Have your wifee look at it closely and see if she can see anything.
You can go to any walk-in and they'll give help you best they can, at least give ya wicked pain killers to last til Monday.
Good Luck!!

Anbesol might help. That's what I use when I'm having grinding-induced pain. Years ago, I actually ground a big chunk out of one of my molars and had to have the tooth rebuilt. Periodically, I have to have it touched up, because even night guards don't completely stop me from grinding.

i'm not a grinder but i have woken up from sleep with my mouth clamped shut real tight....when anxiety is higher than usual for me i tend to clamp my teeth together real hard...i've chipped quite a few too....but this is the ritual i follow when i have sore teeth...remember grinding and clamping can actually cause your teeth to move....so if ya feeling like ya off when ya bite don't worry it will come back to normal....
keep brushing the hurt area
i often rinse with salt water helps the gums too
i use and swear by it anbesol extra strength liquid form not gel...
and rub below your temple where the jaw would connect to relax
its not a perfect solution but might help the pain
and again i am an expert at tooth aches and i have taken even tylonols 3's for pain which would not recede any....BUT take advil cold and sinus ya'd be surprise to see it works quite well....

I've had a root canal but I don't think it's the same tooth.  I can't chew on it and if I do, I'd rather cut my hand off.  Gonna see if there's an after hours number.  Could be an infection.  Not gonna be a fun weekend.

And the tooth feels like it could be loose a tiny bit.

Okie Dokie, Shit.  Please, sugar, quit shaking and poking at your tooth.  The wax is only to hold you until you can get to the dentist - to make a toothy womb to protect the bastard.  Then, I would suggest that you take your knee surgery drugs and drink a sixer.  You'll make 'til Monday.  I tiled my bathroom while hopped up in this manner (dry sockets).  Of course, it looks like the special olympics tiled my bathroom, but my mouth didn't hurt until I could get to my dentist for him to pack my gapping gum holes.

Called the dentist at home this morning and she thinks it's probably an abcessed tooth.  She prescribed some antibiotics.

Abscessed tooth SMG ? I hope that you don't go into a coma or something over this. Be sure to bring your Conky finger puppet with you to the dentist  :P

Of course knowing SMG, I'm betting he has the full sized doll instead of just a simple ole finger puppet  ;)

While I was up from 2am- now, that thought crossed my mind.  At one point I actually thought about getting my wife to slam the door with a string around the tooth.

And I made sure not to glue one of my daughters toys to my hand.

I think I'll watch that episode for inspiration.

That's the thing if the pain is in your root canal tooth you can't feel it there since the nerves are gone.  In my case it was the gums above the teeth where I felt the pain.  If you do decide to pull your own tooth make sure you get the right one :)

Shake was on the money with this one.  Except for the grinding part.  It didn't cause it.

Had a double root canal this morning.  Not to bad until he thought he should squeeze the pus out of my gum area.  This was easily the most horrific pain I have ever endured.  It was Jack Bauer-esque.  The fucker tortured me for at least 5 minutes, then charged me $600.  All in all, glad it was done, and I decided that I didn't want to work on my first day back after knee surgery, so I left at 10 30 right after the dental procedure.

Then to top it all off, I got a call from my former manager this afternoon about a job that I'd be perfect for, only to find out it closed on Friday, and they weren't going to help me out.

I assume my dog will die tonight.  (J/K)

So your manager called you to tell you about this great job you could have had if he called you earlier?  That was a prick job.

Vanny, I do have insurance so it'll cost me nothing.  My buddy (BM at my wedding) neglected his teeth and had to have one pulled and he looks like a country bumpkin.  I'd like to keep what I can, and if they go, they'll be fakes

Shake, it was an old manager that really looks out for stuff like that for me.  He didn't know it ended.  They only posted the job for 2 weeks.  Upper Canada district School Board were looking for a project manager and an engineer would have saved them tons of money in consulting fees.  Oh well, hope they hire our consulting firm now.

Thanks SL, the week can only get better.

The swelling has decreased and I can open it far enough for a McD double cheeseburger.
