This week's reason I'm a geek...

Although we're still wavering, the husband and I are pretty sure we're going to be amongst the nerd masses waiting in line to purchase the Nintendo Wii at 12:01 AM, 11/19/2006. Anyone else?

I think thats what I'm going to ask for for Christmas.  I have a buddy that is going to buy his on 11-19 though.  I haven't yet read a negative review of the system.  One thing that almost everyone points out is how easy it is for non gamers to pick up on.  Also, all of the old Nintendo and Sega systems' games will be available for download.  Thats just awesome.  I really think Nintendo is going to surprise everyone in this round of the console wars.  They plan to produce something like 10 times as many units as Sony does for PS3 for the holiday season.

The DS is also beating the pants off of the PSP for both sales of the handheld itsself and the games.  I have a DS and I fucking love it.  Wireless play, cheaper and more addictive games than any system I've ever played on before.  For those of you who don't know, the bottom screen is touch sensitive and you use a stylus as the control for a lot of the games.  This is revolutionary (and really fun);  just like I see the Wii's motion sensitive controls as being revolutionary to home gaming.

I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too old to line up like that for ANYTHING anymore lol.  That said, I went by a Best Buy this morning about 8:30 am and there was QUITE the line out there for the PS3.  It's pretty cool and rainy out there as well .  I also saw them on the news last night from that store and the store manager said they expect the same type of deal for the Wii release only not to the same extent.

DD - if you and your hubby decide to line up make sure ya stay hydrated and keep warm - even in your part of the country ya can't be too careful about getting cold .... I'm sure you two will figure out a way to keep warm  :perv1:.  Best of luck in your quest :).

For DS doubters, here is a site that presents sales figures for consoles.

http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/sales/

and a slashdot article from today about the wii
http://games.slashdot.org/games/06/11/17/1645248.shtml
Quote
Gamasutra's semi-regular feature taking the pulse of folks in the game industry turns its attention this week to the PS3 and Wii launches. From the comments submitted to the site, it seems that many industry vets are generally more excited about the Wii than with Sony's offering. From the article: "'Definitely a Wii (already pwii-ordered). The price point of the PS3 and the lack of enticing launch titles makes me as interested in a PS3 as I am interested in getting a root canal.' - Ryan Conlon, Gearbox Software. 'I am buying a Wii because Sony is too arrogant, from their dev tools to the price point.' - Ed O'Tey, Electronic Arts. 'Wii - pre-ordered. I applaud the attempt to expand and explore game interaction with the Wii. I will not be purchasing a ps3.' - Jim Perkins, EA Canada"

and one more DS thing:

Its fun, you can pick it up and play it for 10 minutes and put it back away or play for 3 hours solid.  You also don't have to have been playing console games for the last ten years to understand it unlike something like Madden 2007.

I think this just put an end to any doubts we had about the Wii.  ;) A tad NSFW.

I find that I don't play near as many video games now as I had before. Yesterday whilst going to the Canadian Tire me and my bud drove by a Futureshop where there were like 20 people lined up, at 2 o'clock yesterday, for the PS3. Dan mooned them,  :moon: as I tried to drive straight cus I was laughing so hard. I also heard that someone sold a PS3 for $8000 on EBAY today, thats nuts.

On a Wii related note, my roomie works at a EBGames so he got first pick on the pre-orders. So i'll get to try on on Sunday.  :D

Cheap and Fun !  :perv1: I like it .

Yeah , I'm really curious how the controllers hold up in the real world , how well they will work with the old Gamecube games , and how much it will cost to buy extra controllers ( we need 4).....

I went by Walmart and Future shop last night to check out the line for the PS3. Craziness I say.

Ya, I shot three guys in the lineup here at our walmart.  Took their Doritos and Mountain Dew.

Hey DD - you and your hubby be careful out there.  I just saw on the news that somewhere in the US a couple doods decided to rob people in line for PS3's at a Wallymart and a person in like got shot over it  .  Guess it's hard out there for a gamer.

SMASH MY PS3

http://thatvideosite.com/video/3613

Anyone who would wait days in line and spend $700 just to be the first to own a PS3 obviously has his priorities out of whack. That's a fact, not an opinion! The only way I can justify it is for those clever ones who are just planning to sell it immediately on ebay for thousands and thousand of dollars.

For the love of...look at this...INSANITY!

Holy crap.
I've just watched a few auctions finish and one guy out bid someone in the very last second.
Those things are going for $1300 plus shipping (in most cases).
I think Ricky and Julian should get into that racket.

Just got word our local Wal Mart has 20 Wii's in stock and no one lined up yet. Think we'll probably just drive over about an hour before they go on sale tonight and take our chances. We stood in line at Best Buy every year when the Lord of the Rings DVD's went on sale and we stood in line for hours to see the MySpace Black Carpet Borat movie premiere. Those crowds were nerdtastic and annoying but never hostile. I can only imagine what an oddball bunch (myself included) the Wii crowd will be.  :P

Yeah, no one is suppose to know this, but my roomy who works at EBGames told me this afternoon that they were only suppose to get enough Wiis in to cover the pre-orders, 15, and they ended up getting in 36.

Tonight's Geek Headline: "Oui, We Wii'd!"

We've returned, victorious, from nerd hell. I am mentally exhausted from listening to an hour and a half of Dungeons and Dragons banter.

The Wii comes with a sports package...baseball, bowling, tennis, golf and boxing. We've been alternating through all the games for at least 8 hours but tennis is our fave. This really is the most fun I've had playing video games since the original Atari. It's great for uncoordinated, motion sickness prone folks like me. Please start taking up a collection for my shoulder replacement surgery.

Here's a listing of all the games currently available for the Wii...

I read in the local paper that some guys spent all night waiting in line to buy a PS3, then took it outside and smashed it to pieces.
Some kind of 'artistic statement'. I know what I call it...

I read that with practice you can put spin on the ball and all matter of tennis moves with a little practice.  Is that true??
