Cats in Summer
« on: Jul 06, 2006, 04:02 PM »
My cat's been wilting in this heat. He spends most his time (at least I think...since Im at work all day...) sprawled in the tub. Not with water in it, just in the empty tub. Cause its cool Im sure...he's there when I leave at 8am and still there when I return at 5:30pm. and he's been drinking the water from the air conditioner.
so is this ok I wonder?
So. How to keep your cat cool in the summer...what do you do?

Air conditioner water is ok I think but Id leave out water with ice in it.  Maybe turn on a fan too and the kitty will move to the fan instead of the tub.

Or put some toys in the tub to keep him happy.

Fill the tub with water so the cat can have some fun.

Our cat spends the majority of her time hanging out in the window seat in the kitchen or laying on the garage floor, almost implying that we keep the house too cool to suit her...74 degrees F during the day and 68 degrees F at night.

My cat stay's in when it's cold, cos it's warmer in the house, and stay's in when it's hot cos it's cooler in the house. One of these day's she will go out :-)
Don't matter how little you know, someone out there know's even less !

You keep your house at 68 at night!  Wow.  We just got Central AC and I find 78 is good enough.

I did a Google search too and came up empty but the husband says the A/C water should be just fine.

How long has the little furry guy been drinking the water from the AC? If he hasn't got sick or shit all over the place then I think you have your answer Van.
Makes sense.

Yeah if he's been drinkin' AC water for a long time and hasnt got sick then I guess he's good to go.

My kitties manage to keep themselves cool during the summer. My older cat Figaro doesnt mind sitting in front of a fan but Smudge doesnt like the air being blown on to her so she usually just sits in the basement under the couch.

AC water is distilled , so it's pure.

Awww, is your kitty long-haired, Van?
One of my kitties seems to be sensitive to the heat as well, but she gets sick & her eyes get runnier (she's Persian or Himalayan).

It prolly has a bit of dust and pollin in it but nothing that would hurt a kitty.  The chances of Freon leaking is very very slim.

Does the air conditioner leak water to the inside of the house?  It should just drip on the outside when the water tray is full.  Or are you talking about central air and the cat is drinking from the drainage tube?

Totally makes sence...buuuuut. I only put the AC out last week, so he's only been drinking it for max. 1 week, and not alot cause when I busted him I scolded him. When I leave for work I shut the AC off. Thats when he drinks from the toilet. Now matter how much fresh water w/ ice I leave him, he poo-poos it, stubborn lil facker. Anyway, he still lives to tell today, so it must be all good.

Yes Melba, Sebastien's incredibly long-haired, so he gets reallyreally warm. My sister has 2 persians and she got them the lion-shave for summer. Now THAT is some look for those persians I tell ya...SO cute! But my Bastiens not having it. I can hardly brush him never mind a shave.

CG The AC is a window one that I have to divert the hose inside to let the water leak in a bucket cause the balcony downstairs sticks out too far, and the water would drip there. So Bastien had found the bucket, thats where he got the great idea to taste test it.

so, if AC water is purified like Saucy says, then maybe its actually good for him? can't be worse than toilet water....

Thanx for all your input guyz! whooohoooo!!

toilet water is the same water that comes out the tap.  So unless you have a blue puck in there, let him drink.

Yeah toilet water is the same water that comes out of the tap but the tap water you drink doesn't sit in a filthy germ riddled toilet bowl.  If you don't want your cat/dog to drink from the toilet you shoud put the cover down over the toilet seat.

I had a cat once that drank water from the overflowed drain of the washing machine. Didn't turn out so well.

One of my friends has her long haired cat shaved & yes it does look cute! I've been thinking about getting Pansy shaved, but have been too lazy to make an appointment.
Too bad your boy's too stubborn to shave, he'd probably feel so much better. Anyway, do you think he'd lay on a damp towel placed in the tub? (Not so wet that he would feel the water, but just so it feels cool against his body)

I'd say no problem with drinking the AC water as long as our clean the tray the water drops into often.  If not it would kinda be like a human drinking fresh water our of the same dirty glass forever.  Shiticane [Muggles] and Shitstick [Lexy] are both indoor cats and have no problem with the AC being set at 73* all the time.  If they are warm the go lie right below the ceiling vents when the AC is running and if they are cool they hand out on the bed, couch, or their bed to get their own body heat going for them.

I do recall baring more than a few things to Reverend Elvis in Vegas but having said that ... What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas!  Haven't you seen the commercial?

I prefer the lid be down.  Put the lid down, then flush.  Ergo, no germies become airborne, gnomesayin'?  No, I'm not a neat freak - it's just that one of my dog's water dishes is in the bathroom and he doesn't need to lap up my or my guests' cooties.

Did you brush off that cheesy before you ate it?  :P

Cheers,
B.

Seat's always DOWN here in the compound! Like Becca sez, keeps the germs from flyin, and besides which LOOKS better: Closed toilet or open weird bowl of funky water?

I don't know how to fry toilet paper, but I can brown it on one side cheers!
