Cool bro any good cop stuff happening?  Can you talk back or is it listen only?  Im guessing talking on the cop frequency would be incredibly illegal.

I had a scanner for a while a few years ago. My cousin and I took it into the city and followed police calls with a video camera and a Ford Laser (with brakes that failed twice in city traffick that night). At one point we heard that an abducted woman had been found in a park just near state parliament so we zipped up there to film the whole thing. We got a couple of minutes of footage but were cornered by two undercover officers at one point. They let us go after a bit of third degree and we got it on the tape's audio!). My cousin ended up cutting all the footage up into a music video for another friend's band and it was shown at a film festival here. Another comedy short my cousin filmed in my flat won for the best short at that festival! It also won for best script at a student festival in Sydney. The poice scanner clip won nothing.  :)

Scanners are listen only, transmitting on a police frequency, except in an emergency, is very illegal. I've never had one but I've had a few friends that did. My grandpa had one too, but it was very quiet in the neighborhood he lived in. One of my friends in Newport, Ky had one and it could provide hours of entertainment!!

Stoney, cool story, is there a link for that video? Having a police scanner in a car in the US is illegal, you can be charged with possession of burglary tools!!

I wish! I hope my cousin compiles all his stuff on a site soon.. but he's on the siberian express right now with another cousin. true story.

We left the scanner in the car when we were nabbed.. so we didnt get to find out the subtle legalities of scanner posession. I doubt that the state can prosecute for posession of burglary tools without corroborating evidence or prior convictions recorded. Plus we all looked like dweebs at the time, which is always a great cover.

Good point, there has to be other evidence of burglary and the intention of committing a crime. But the cops can still hassle you about it and make your day miserable.

Yeah. And much like you, I'm an articulate, white male. So that barely ever happens.

OO yeah actually i decided last night i was gonna go out but not drink so i went out with a friend..Went driving listening to the scanner seen a Shed Fire, 2 Domestic Assaults, 1 suicide attempt (guy was taken down by a dog.), 3 DUI's, like 10 loud party complaints, and a stop at Tim Hortans :)

 The bottom line:

-It is illegal to listen in on cellular and cordless phone calls.

-It is illegal to intercept encrypted or scrambled communications.

-It is illegal for scanner manufacturers to sell or import radio scanners that are capable of receiving cellular phone frequencies. (Note: This rule does not apply to sales by individuals and radio scanners made before 1985).

-It is illegal to modify radio scanners so that cellular phone frequencies can be received.

-It is illegal to use information you hear for personal gain. A common example is where a taxi driver listens to a competitor's dispatch channel for fare pick-ups and then races over and picks-up the fares.

-It is illegal to use information you hear to aid in the commission of a crime.

-It is illegal to disclose information you hear to other persons.

Yea i cannot transmit and even if i could i don't feel like spending the next 20 years in Jail and a $250 000 fine :0. I have 2 scanners one is for a veichle or a base station and my other one is portable.

I bought this one http://www.scannermaster.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=01%2D500826 and this antenna http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/scanants/0312.html well my dad gave me some bling to.

And my Uncle in the RCMP gave me his old portable scanner. It a Radio Shack Triple Trunking Scanner and just love listing to them...And also saved my ass a couple of time. :)

Edit: Forgot about seen public intox....Now thats funny shit to see

  That picture is really funny!

I used to have a CB  , and even a licence to operate it ( back in the days that you needed a licence , before they lost popularity) , when I was a teen. I would lay in bed and listen and talk. I always wanted a scanner , and drooled over the Radio Shack ( now The Source  ) catalogue as a teen. I don't know why I never bought one ?  :? It would be cool to get one now , to hear the action. There is a little  book that you can get locally , that has all of the frequencies for each municipality....

We used to listen back in the day in NB.  Usually heard at least once a night the cops talking to or arresting or dragging off to the drunk tank someone we knew or were related to.

Maybye on the weekend ill put a live stream on...I hate those busy scanners you can never understand what there saying and there 10-10 codes change from every state. Here the 10-10 codes are the same (exept big citys like toronto, vancover, ottawa, etc) LOL i already kno some 10-10 codes just by listening to my scanner.
10-71 Complaint
10-4 Affermative
10-10 Negative
10-21 Phone Call
10-27-29 Search on plates,persons,boats,etc
BLAH BLAH BLAH

Great idea, cops are usually such jolly people. They love a good joke, especially when they're the butt of it.

If you buy a CB the police, in the USA anyway, monitor Channel 9. Using ch 9 is much like calling 911, it better be an emergency! You can be charged with a misdemeanor for broadcasting on the police band if you don't have a valid reason to do so. Think, Ricky, think!
