Ha ha nome-census, you will be deported if you don't fill out your census.  I did mine online.  I just saw onthe news the website is so busy it is being brought down.

Apparently, if ya don't file you can get a big ass fine - IIRC it's $10K and/or 5 or so years in jail .  Not exactly a "small crime" or low profile by the boys standards lol!  FWIW, I did mine online in 5 minutes when I got the form back in mid April.  Maybe the census people are using the same virtual server we are lol!

The info is about the U.S but im sure same rules here...

http://people.howstuffworks.com/question345.htm

Quote
In the United States, the census is officially a big deal (see How the Census Works to learn exactly how big a deal it is). Originally, the census was meant to be a way to count everyone so that the members of the House of Representatives could be allocated properly to the states. Every 10 years there would be a count, and states with more people got more members in the House. Over time, the government has gotten significantly more complicated, and today, the federal government allocates money to states for all sorts of programs. Something like $100 billion gets distributed every year, and quite a bit of it is distributed based on population. The census provides the only official head count.

Someone is very likely to notice if you do not fill out and return your form. After April 1 in a census year, all of the responses received by the U.S. Census Bureau will be compared to major lists of U.S. residences. If your response has not been received -- or if you didn't complete all the questions on your form -- someone from the census will contact you for that information. The census is a $6.5 billion dollar project. They can afford to be thorough!

If you refuse to give out the information or you deliberately give inaccurate information, you can be in legal trouble. According to United States Code, Title 13 (Census), Chapter 7 (Offenses and Penalties), SubChapter II, if you're over 18 and refuse to answer all or part of the Census, you can be fined up to $100. If you give false answers, you're subject to a fine of up to $500. If you offer suggestions or information with the "intent to cause inaccurate enumeration of population," you are subject to a fine of up to $1,000, up to a year in prison, or both. Here's the official verbiage:

Depending on where you live, they will either keep calling you or send people to your house until they get the info they want.  Why do you ask?  Were you planning on not doing it?  Why?

There are actually 2 different versions that they sent out.  If you are lucky, you received the short one (5 minutes max).  If you are not, you received the long one (20 minutes + maybe ... I can't really guess on the time because I am lucky  ;) )

Got the long one and mailed it in a week ago. Ten or twelve years ago we got the long one and that was followed up by a six-month compulsory detailed study of my family's week-to-week activities - very fackin stressful, but their wasn't much choice. I wonder if they really go after folks who refuse to play, anyone know?

counted and recounted cheers!

They only do it once every 10 years, so (assuming you are also Canadian) that would be the last time you or anybody else did it.

I threw that envelope where it belonged, the recycle bin. Last time there was one ( i beleive that was four years ago), i refused to answer it and they sent some unpleasant elderly lady to act all threathening and stuff. So i simply told her that i had just moved in and that i did not know what the entire hoopla was all about, wich was a very poor lie. She did not buy it but wrote it down on her form and left. That was the extent of the machiavelian punishment i was promised if i did not do my civic duty.

What if I don't want to be in the census?

All Canadian citizens are required by law to take part in the census. If you don't return a census form by May 16, expect a call from a census enumerator to remind you to send it in.

The maximum penalty for not filling out a census form, or for providing false information, is a $500 fine and/or three months in prison.

lol I hope my bud doesnt get fined :D

They just said you had to take part in the census, I saw nothing that says you  have to fill it out correctly.

It sounds very draconian this $500.00 or 30 days in jail crap!

The Dude: Oh, no I did, but I spent most of my time occupying various administration buildings... smoking a lot of thai stick... breaking into the ROTC... and bowling. To tell you the truth Brandt, I don't remember most of it.
