Ever have a really bad sunburn?
« on: May 15, 2006, 11:23 AM »
I have one right now.  I was working in my yard this weekend getting ready to open the pool.

I have not been burned this bad since I was a teenager and my girlfriend and I used to put baby oil on ourselves hoping to burn so it would turn into a tan! lol

Stupid me forgot to wear sunscreen!

Yeah I've had some really bad sunburns in my day, and a severe burn when I was a teenager, I fell asleep at my cousins house on the pool deck. Man I was sick for days because of that. I think it's banana boat that has an after burn gel you can buy (it's blue in a clear bottle) and that helps take the sting out of it. If I ever get a burn (which is very rare now), I use a ton of moisturizer on it and that helps quite a bit ......... put it on 3 times per day.

um lol me and my friend did that a couple years ago in hopes of getting a great tan....didn't really work for me cause I don't get a tan cause I'm pale, I just get burnt.  Yeah I burn pretty quickly..even on a cloudy day I'll still get burnt.  I always gotta wear sunscreen and a hat or whatever if I'm gonna be outside.  Burns hurt!  Especially when you have showers..they just kill!  Putting aloe vera on burns usually does help a bit.

I'll be slatherin' on the SPF 15 in a few minutes , as I'm headed out for a day of work on my Christmas tree farm , it's gonna be a scorcher here today! I'm  fair haired and skinned , with freckles , so I have to watch out ! I'm paranoid , so it's long shirts , sun hats , and sun screen for me !!( Slip , Slap , Slop)

I'm very fair skinned as well. I never tan ever! Even after a burn it just peels off back to pale! lol

I am using aloe vera and some stuff called Solarcaine. Its medicated first aid lotion for minor burns.

Anyone know what the highest SPF is?  I need like 100, lol :)

Yep, I'm in the same boat...fair skinned and burn easily. My uncle had several skin cancers removed over the years and he made a believer out of me. I'm a big sunscreen advocate.

Yah, I was poolside one fine sunny day and I may have forgot to put suntan lotion on my one feet.  Anyways, my foot was so badly burned that it had swelled up to the point that I could not fit it into any shoes/boots or anything.  The blister that formed on the top of my foot was larger than a loonie and the pain from my foot expanding to two maybe three times it's natural size was excruciating!  :x  The doctor at the clinic told me to get some aloe vera lotion after a two hour wait...

Not that I can recall.  I am blessed with an abundance of melanocytes, which provides a natural protection from the sun'd UV rays.

Oh the pain!!!

I've been sun burned so badly that my whole back, shoulders, neck and ears were one huge sheet of blisters.
I had a fever for 3 days and a headache from hell .... think of a migraine that won't stop for days.

THEN the fun begins when all the blisters pop and you start peeling.

yuck

Sheets of skin start falling off ... I mean ... pieces of skin the size of notebook paper start to roll up and tear away.

I don't want to think about it any more...

Calomine lotion helps to soothe the burn and stop the itching, but for you people with freckles-you gotta wear sunscreen!! You can get SPF 65 in some places and for you fair skinned people, I highly recommend it. As a child I never got a sunburn, but as an adult I scorch, so I have to re-apply sunscreen alot. I love the tan look, but am so afraid of skin cancer! :(

I had a similar experience the first time I went to Florida in 1992. Now when I'm at a beach if I'm not in the water I stay in the shade. I don't like the idea of laying out to suntan, and I certainly wont use a tanning booth. When I'm going to be in the sun for an extended period of time I always use SPF 45.

Two years ago in Cuba I saw an older woman, I'm guessing she was in her 50s, with the worse skin I've ever seen. Her skin looked like Kentucky Fried Chicken. I was thinking to myself, "Yeah, you look really attractive right now."

I'm a pale redhead (that's red, not ginger  ;)) but I  can usually stay out in the sun for ages. I've been to some really hot countries and come back as white as I left.

Yet I spend about 20 minutes in the sun in downtown Toronto last week and manage to scorch my forehead and the bits where my sunglasses didn't cover.  Oh, I look really foxy now.  Damn.

Fuck! I had to do an emergency breaks replacement on our Van today. I was on a very short schedule , and it was sooo muggy , as it had gone from pouring rain to bright sun 5 minutes before I started. I had to strip down. 3/4 of an hour on the sunny side of the van gave me a nasty back burn. I'm feeling roasted and quite foolish..... Better be the first and last of the season!

Hub and I got a bit burnt on Monday...he more then me... We were fishing off the dock where we were camping.  Put sunscreen on the back of our necks and ears...bad when your ear gets sunburnt man...but didn't do the arms.  I was barely pink but he was really red, forearms only.  Guess thats what happens when you sit in the same spot on a cloudy day for 4 hours.  Caugt a few fish tho  :D.
My God...what a drunk horror show!

That sucks. :(
The UV we subject ourselves to these days is way fucking stronger than when I was a kid. I have to put sunblock on my left arm just to go out for a drive
With a name like Tan, I thought you would be used to the sun
