Moving to Calgary
« on: Mar 28, 2006, 01:38 PM »
Well the wife and I have decided to pull the pin and move to Calgary ( Airdrie) bout 20 mins north. I don't have a job but we will have no mortgage and a bigger house there. Im nuts right. Im a manager in a 24 acre green house and working about 50-60 hours a week and after the birth of our son ( May 4th 2004 ) I just think making a lot less money but being able to be home more is imprortant. So if there is anybody out there that know of any good jobs in the area that would be great.  Derek RNG

Ballsy move.  Been thinking long and hard about pulling up and headin out to Calgary.  Wouldn't have much trouble finding a job with all the construction going on.  Two best friends are out there.

Lucky with the house out there.  Hopefully it works out for you.

My friend has a nice Project Manager job with Ellis Don Construction.  Making $ hand over fist, but he has to work for it.  I wouldn't be chatting on the org if I was out there.

Ya I always say the same thing too...but I tell ya sometimes the prospect of being able to buy an affordable house and almost guarenteed employment{not to mention no PST!} could change my mind.

Lot's of work in Vancouver{and more to come with the Olympics}...but housing prices are outrageous.

Good luck on the move!

Hey I think that if you're going to be home more and get to enjoy your life more, than go for it, especially if you have friends and family to help out. Getting rid of the mortgage will really help, and you will find work I'm sure! best of luck!!

Well I'm back!!! I have been in Airdrie AB for alomost 5 months and it has only snowed once since I have been here. The parks job went well I saved them over 1200 labor hours in 4 months and still ened up being pased over for a full time job to a nice kid that has worked there for the last 4 summers. ( oh and his mom works for puplic works ) All good, I have applied to PW and they start betweem 38-45K a year. We bought a nice house only 10 yrs old. I didn't have to do a thing to it. And the mortgage went from 1700 to 400 a month. Cant wait for the movie and good to be back! SEEEEE YAAAAA !!!!!!  RNG

Calgary was a nice city. I lived there in the early 1990's. I found the city to be really spread out, lots of room.
Lots of places to party there to.
Lots of pot and it seems everyone smokes it.
I plan to retire in BC but i just may take a short trip to Alberta to old stomping grounds ;)

New news: I took Thursday and Friday off and I end up getting a call from my boss's boss and he wants to meet for coffee. He goes on to tell me there will be an internal posting for the job I have been doing since May 1st ( 100 % my job if I want it) He wanted to tell me as he had recommended me to public works and then decided to post the job now instead of in Jan or Feb as he was tired of loosing good people ( He magically found the $ in his budjet to do it this year. (just so happens that on Wed both of my boss's went for a bike tour with the city manager. ( my 1/4 of the city looks kick ass compared to the rest) so now I have two options. I told my wife it would all work out. Capt S. what kind of work do you do? The only people not working here are welfare lifer's and dead people.  Thanks to all of you for your support and good thoughts. If anybody hears of the boys comming to Calgary let me know. I don't spent as much time on line as I used to.  Seeeee Yaaaa RNG

I work in an arena. The only arena jobs that open in calgary are the private rinks. Only the city rinks would pay close to what I'm making plus I wouldn't get on full time. Ah well.

Capt Shittastic. I am in Airdrie ab and the city has just taken over the two rinks in town ( a non profit co had them ) They have full time hours but no benies right now . I talked to Greg at work. He is in charge of building maint. for the city and is charge of the take over and is interested in talking to you. I told him I had no idea what your qualifications were but he rushed to get me one his biz card for you . so if you want his e-mail give me a holla . Never hurts to ask. RNG
