Great job, Melba! You are very talented....You should get a picture of RW and JP with their look-a-like bears when you come to Halifax in April. How long does it take to knit one? I think they are really sweet - is a Randy or Mr. Lahey bear a possibility? What about J-Roc?

Heehee, thanks! My best friend's grandmother is an avid knitter & she made a bear that my friend gave me for my birthday a couple of years ago, she also gave me a copy of the pattern knowing that I was beginning to knit. A basic bear is actually pretty simple (& inexpensive) to make, especially for beginners; if I really sit down & work seriously on it I could probably get one done in a couple of 2 hour sessions. After completing the finishing touches on Kip, I started a Randy bear, I've got one side of his pants done, but have to go out to get some more flesh coloured yarn for his body & head. A Bubbles bear is still in development (working things out in my head then have to put my ideas on paper). I could do a J Roc one that would be similar to Kip, but wearing pants instead of shorts & no moustache.

I still can't believe that my Ricky teddy bear was what enabled me to have a conversation with JP when I met the Boys in April. I'm pretty sure I'll be bringing the bears with me to Halifax in April, so maybe I can get a pic with the Boys & the bears, they'd be too difficult to autograph though.

Maddogg, I've got a few knitting projects on the go right now, but maybe in the summer we could work something out?

Jen, are you going to try to make it to the Marquee Party in April?

I can't wait to see the Randy, Bubbles and J-Roc bears - do you crochet too?

It doesn't look like I will be at the Marquee Party which is a real shame since I wanted to meet you and the rest of the orgsters making the trip to Dartmouth. I promised my family I would be home for Easter and since I didnt make it home for Christmas or my birthday last year, I sort of owe them a visit - can't disappoint my little neices and nephew. Thank you for asking tho - I hope you have a great time and I look forward to seeing the pics from the event especially of the boys with their bears. :)

I'd kinda like to start knitting too . Apparently it's become cool for young guys to knit..... 8)

I've only made one crochet project, a small throw. But there's a new book in my bookstore & it has some really neat projects in it, so I may have to become a Happy Hooker (that's the name of the crochet book!).

Jen, I was looking forward to getting to meet you too, but it's good that you'll be visiting with your family.

Saucy, if you're serious & you don't have anyone to teach you the basics, the book How To Knit by Debbie Bliss is really helpful (this is what I used to learn); the illustrations & instructions are fairly clear & easy to follow. I didn't realize it had become cool for young guys to knit.

For anyone who is a knitter & looking for newer, modern & fun patterns, check out Stitch 'N Bitch: The Knitters Handbook by Debbie Stoller; this book also outlines the basics but the illustrations aren't as clear as in How To Knit.

Wow , she sure has alot of books

EDIT: I have a question for ya Melba. Is a project limited by the length of the needle? I ask , because , being a practical guy , I would probably like to knit a blanket , but size is important .....

Debbie Bliss is pretty prominant in the knitting world.

Needle length is important. If you are going to knit a blanket you are probably going to want circular knitting needles. These needles are attached by a cord, and will be better when knitting a blanket because you won't have your stitches all bunched up (& then your blanket once you get a couple of feet of it done), you won't have to worry so much about stitches falling off the needles (which is horrible!). See the pic for an example of circular needles (the blanket I'm working on is made from scraps or partial balls of yarn that people have given me).

However, if you are just making square blocks that you are going to sew together as a blanket later, then regular needles will do.

Do you have a pattern in mind, or still looking around?

Van, totally give it a try!

Melba

When Jack was in Sick Kids and also our local hospital, the little hat's that were given to him were knitted by a group that knits them to be given to the hospitals for newborn's and premies. My mother in-law is really in knitting, and I told her one way of paying tribute to Jack's memory is to start knitting little hats and booties for the hospitals.
Have you thought about doing this?

I have thought about it, but I've never made any clothing other than scarves, so I would have to read up on it before I attempt it. But, this is something I will do in the future & knowing that it can make an impact like it did with you will make it much more meaningful to me.

Saucy, let me know if you want me to scan pictures of blankets & patterns for you, ok? (teehee, 'do it' with your wife!)

Elle*, I'll dig up the thread with the other pics for you.

Edit: Here's the thread I was thinking of, but I don't think Ricky's in there:

Just noticed that Randy Bear was lost in the shiticane when 3 days were wiped out.

I'm in the middle of Bubbles Bear, but had to take a break & make something new & fun, so I made a toy mouse for my kitties (& of course they don't even want to play with it, dang cats).

That's really cool Melba, I used to knit, I bought the "complete idiots guide to knitting" .......I knit when I was kid too, my Nona showed me how to make slippers ....... you know the one's with big pom-poms on them .......lol .... making dishcloths was my big thing ......Debbie Bliss has some beautiful sweater patterns for kids and I would love to do it again, but I have really bad arthritis and being on the computer all day working is bad enough for my hands. I loved doing that and I used to make all kinds of crafts and sew like crazy but the pain, I can't cope with.

Just finished the Bubbles Bear. I'm not 100% sure that I like this one yet; I knew Bubbles would be really difficult because I wasn't sure what to do about his glasses, I ended up just embroidering them on.

A few weeks ago, I contacted the Volunteer Association at McMaster Hospital (where our children's hospital is located), earlier this week, they replied & have now sent me patterns for the most needed items for the hospital! I can't wait until I get the patterns (I just hope they're not too difficult for me)!
