Sci-fi/comic/fantasy fans speak up

Hi everyone,

I hope I'm not the only one, but I really enjoy sci-fi/comic stuff. There hasn't been nearly enough related discussion. I'm hoping fans of the genre here at the ORG (if any) wouldn't mind coming out the closet. So whether your pleasure be Farscape, Babylon 5, Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Doctor Who, X-Files, Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men, The Lord of the Rings, you name it, it's all good. Let's see if this flies.

The other day my friend let me borrow the complete Firefly series DVD. I've watched all 17 episodes in less than two days. I just couldn't stop. The writing, the acting, the characters, the premise, it's all fantastic. I can't believe this critically acclaimed show only lasted one season...less than one season! I don't think FOX gave it a chance. Firefly is probably the best sci-fi I've even seen. It's certainly better than the two most popular sci-fi franchises out there, namely Star Trek and Star Wars. In my opinion Star Trek and Star Wars have been on life support since the end of Deep Space Nine and the opening credits of Episode I, respectively. Firefly proved that all sci-fi needs is excellent writing; not excessive CGI and a gazillion dollar budget. This is a concept that George Lucas just doesn't understand.

I'm a huge Battlestar Galactica fan, old and new.

I haven't seen any of the new BSG. I hear it's excellent. So were you one of the people upset that Starbuck is now a woman? :P I'm not sure if Space airs the original BSG. On Boxing Day I watched the entire Battlestar Galactica: Original Series Viewers Choice Marathon - all 10 episodes of it. It's cheesy but still really enjoyable. I find it funny that the original series used the micron as their primary unit of distance. I guess a micron on Caprica is not the same as a micron on Earth. :P

Batman

Are you a fan of THE movie. To me there's only one: Batman Begins. Sounds like the next one wont be out until 2008 but rumours are already buzzing. One of the latest is that Paul Bettany may play The Joker. I think Hugo Weaving would make the perfect Joker.

It is good and I am upset about it. Any romantic link between Starbuck and Apollo is just wrong. Not too mention Boomer is now an oriental chick and Colonel Tighe is an old white guy.  ](*,)

Dr. Who
Battlestar
DUNE
TAPS..yes, I love that show..if anyone saw the episode where they went to the Cresent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas..it was one of the best...I have reservations there for March...we live about 40 minutes from there..I have always wanted to stay there because of the numerous ghost sightings and glorious history..finally after living here 11 years I am going...we are staying in room 419...Theodora's room..that is where Grant from TAPS stayed and his bags were left in the middle of the room and when he returned, he couldn't get the door open due to his bags were all shoved up against the door per the story also, we are taking the ghost tour..with the guy who was featured on the show...Mr. Heath...it was awesome...I will post pictures if I get a good orb of ghostly figure...*smiles*

Well , I started reading as a kid with Batman comics , so that's what I meant , but of the Batman movies , I have to agree , that Batman Begins is the only one that I really enjoyed!

And Cottonelle reminds me that I loved Herberts Dune books . I read most of them as a teen , but was weirded out by the Movie  :? :?

I also love Blade Runner. The Hellicopter pilot that I have flown with for work many times , was the pilot for the end scene of the movie. He often plays the soundtrack through the headphones while flying. There is no thrill like flying remote Coastal BC with a hotshot pilot , playing that music !  8)

Never really was into scifi series stargate, outer limits, start trek..are series that made me not want to watch any of it. , did like movies until they mostly became cgi cartoons with no suspense
Recently DD' advisde Firefly to me and i must say that i was really suprised so felth the need for more after ive seen the eps and the movie. The movie is indeed the kind of scifi adventure story star wars used to be Frickin love it! Ow that reminds me that i used to be a starwars freak as a kid and had almost every toy it really came close in the end. Sold them to a friend when i was 12 to buy gameboy games.. Think ill regret that one for ever.. I felth the need to watch more scifi after i saw Firefly so i downloaded and catched up with battlestar gallactica now. Its not as good as firefly but deffently good enough to keep watching.

Dont really like the new spiderman movies. Batman series and xmen are all decent or atleast watcheble imo Sin City is probebly my fav comic book movie..

Battlestar Gallactica...old and new
Dr. Who
Firefly
Star Trek The Next Generation
X Files

My older brother has always been a sci-fi nut so everything I know, I learned from him.

CL, you are going to have such a wonderful time at the Crescent Hotel. The hubby and I have been twice...once on a family trip and once on our own. We took the ghost tour when we were last there in November 2003. You are going to love it!!!! Unfortunately, no ghostly orbs turned up in any of our pics. If you get a chance, try out the New Moon Spa. It is to die for!!!! Looking forward to hearing about your trip in March.

Ahhh! I'm a total sci fi nerd! Woohoo!

Star Wars
Star Trek
Battlestar (original)
Batman
Spiderman
X-Files
X-Men
Dune
2001: A Space Odyssey
Firefly
Lexx

Aww, the list could go on and on!
But hey, doesn't anyone think that with the sucess of 'Serenity' (the Firefly movie,) maybe the series could be revived? Because, this show totally kicked ass, and it was never given a proper chance, only being on the air for 1 season. Anyone agree?  :P
Yeah, whatever.....

This might actually work. Looks like there are enough of us to hold a mini-convention, or at least have some on going discussions.

You can throw the latest Three Star War movies in the trash bin

Bless you, Dave. I feel the same way, but we're definitely the minority. I just don't understand the popularity of those three movies and the overall positive reviews. I don't hate Star Wars, just the new movies that were made. George Lucas made Episodes I, II and III just for the profits. I sound like a broken record because I've expressed these opinions before, but essentially those movies are poorly written, poorly acted and poorly directed. They did not benefit the Star Wars franchise at all. They've done more harm than good. And George has the audacity to say in interviews that he did it to complete the story. It was done for money and all the crappy merchandising and no one will convince me otherwise. Episodes 4, 5 and 6 hinted at past events so the audience could come with a general idea of what happened before Anakin Skywaker became Darth Vader. We didn't have to be overburdened with all the details, which could have been good had it been executed properly. Using the "they're supposed to be for kids" excuse is the biggest cop-out ever. Plenty of "kids" movies have been made that don't insult the intelligence of the adults in the audience. Pixar is the master.

But hey, doesn't anyone think that with the sucess of 'Serenity' (the Firefly movie,) maybe the series could be revived? Because, this show totally kicked ass, and it was never given a proper chance, only being on the air for 1 season. Anyone agree?

I'm glad that there are a few Firefly fans amongst us. I love it. Again, it's probably the best sci-fi I've even seen. First of all, FOX did a huge injustice to Firefly. They played some of the episodes out of order and then moved it to the death time slot on Friday night. After the show was cancelled the huge DVD sales proved that Firefly had a core audience and it was possible to resurrect the series. Joss Whedon pitched the show to other networks but was turned down. The movie was made to appease the fans, again based on the sales of the DVD. Rumour has it more Firefly movies are going to be made in the future.

I never watched Buffy or Angel. I'm not really into that genre of sci-fi fantasy. Also, I saw the original movie, which was also written by Joss Whedon, and didn't like it very much. I guess I just assumed the show was the same.

I've never met a female in real life that was into comics, video games, or porn.

Not a huge comic fan but spent a lot of allowances on them back in the day.  Liked the bigger ones like Conan and Nam (or something) and some Ninja one.  Always used to draw them in my own stories.

Here's the latest Spider-man 3 pic. It may look like a b/w pic but it's not. Spidey is wearing the black costume. The villains in the next movie will be Venom and Sandman. I can't wait.
