The Farmers Almanac is always an interesting read
and
I love Douglas Adams (again , my first intro to the genious of Adams was The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy , serialized on CBC Radio , when I was probably 9 years old. (Oh CBC ...Come Back) )
"Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is." --Will Rogers
"Get off that limb , that's where all the nuts are!" --Mrs. Saucy

Yep, Adams is a classic.  Very funny, also like a lot of the cflassic sci-fi writers too, epecially arthur c clarke and Philip K Dick,  My fave in recent years is Robin Hobb (Real name Megan Lindholm or something like that) I love dragons, and her whole concept on dragons and serpents and astral travel (skilling) and animal bonding (wit) just spun me right out.  Farseer triliogy, Live ship traders is the 2 then the tawny man trilogy, just awesome.

Yay, Douglas Adams! I've just finished up The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Currently reading Quicksilver, Volume One of the Baroque Cycle, by Neal Stephenson. (Thanks, Kyle!)

Saucy, I'm glad you resurrected this topic, I love to read! How did your boys like the newest Harry Potter? I found the end quite sad & troubling. If you're ever looking for something to read to your boys with a stron female protagonist there's this book I read when I was younger that I fell in love with, it's called The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson. I'm not sure how available it is because it was published in 1975 (dang! it's older than I am). However, if your boys are more interested in sci fi & fantasy, then they may not like it. The description on the cover reads: Not since Lord of the Flies has there been such a powerful story of children forced to survive in a world without adults. It sounds like you're doing an excellent job of immersing them in the world of literature already, I'm very glad to hear about it!

As for what I'm reading, I'm trying to start Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. The story was inspired by Jane Eyre & tells the story of Rochester's first wife. I read it in school, & remembered how interesting it is; I haven't had a chance to start yet though. Recently I have re-read Life of Pi by Yan Martel, a very excellent book. Tales From Firozsha Baag by Rohinton Mistry, intertwining short stories about the residents of an apartment complex in Bombay. Mistry really does capture what apartment life is like sometimes, it doesn't matter if the apartment is in India or Canada; actually the stories remind me more of my aunt's apartment building, it's much larger than mine.

I'm all about Chuck Palahniuk. He wrote the novel that Fight Club was based on. The rest of his stuff ranges from dark comedy to extreme vulgarity.

Believe it or not, I am really in a stage where I am thinking a lot about religion, spirituality, and belief in God. Wondering if there really is a God, if so....Are all these organized religions just something people conjured up out of their own ignorance hoping it will please God. And if there is a God, is he really laughing at how stupid his children are, and how they just can't get the big picture...(Before someone takes a stroke, that is just my opinion, and I am giving a background as to what, and why I am reading it) I am also facinated about how some people will believe so strongly in their religion to condem loved ones, start wars, kill, and sacrifice their own life all in the name of their God and religion. So I am reading a book right now called "God's Smuggler" written by a guy known only as "Brother Andrew". It's about his experiences, risking his life for years, smuggling bibles into places like Communist China, and Afganistan when it was under rule of the Taliban... Just so that Christians could have bibles to read...Intersesting stuff!

I am really into stories of true life adventures. Just re-read In the Land of White Death, a russian sailors account of an expedetion to the North Pole in 1912. They did not make it. Only two members survived. Gripping stuff. Also read Cannonball! by Brock Yates, the real story of the Cannonball Run. Really good reading.

If you like real life adventures, here a classic novel written about a bunch of sealers back where I grew up, called "Death on the Ice by Cassie Brown"  "An unforgettable protrait of the bloody trade of seal hunting among the ice-fields when ships and men were expendable." some of the dialogue may be hard to understand because it is written as it was spoken in our dialect...But you'll get used to it a couple chapters in.... I still remember the story, when I read the book in high school. Brothers, fathers and sons found frozen to death, holding each other trying to stay warm on the ice flows. Very sad stuff

I thought it was kinda boring...all the boys did was stop in the wilderness for scoffs and cups of tea.... You'll love Death on the Ice if you like Lure of the Labrador Wild
