What do you read?
« on: Sep 03, 2004, 11:21 PM »
"Can you read son?"
"That depends, can you go fuck yourself?"

I just noticed that I went over one post per day average ,so I'm celebrating by starting a new thread! \:D/    :blazing:

What do you like to read (I mean in hard copy)?

I like two magazines: Cannabis Culture and Discover.
my favorite authors are:
William Deverell ( ex Vancouver lawer who writes Canadian thrillers)
Orson Scott Card (the famous Enders game series plus an eclectic mix of fantasy/sci fi and historical)
Neal Stephenson (another very eclectic author)
John Grisham (Fast paced fluff)
William Gibson (cyber punk)
JRR Tolken ( My dad started with the 4 books when I was 5 .I wouldn't let my kids see the movies untill I read the books to them.It took 2 years ,but was a great  fun)
"Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is." --Will Rogers
"Get off that limb , that's where all the nuts are!" --Mrs. Saucy

-Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice?

I have read the trillogy to myself 4 or 5 times in the last 25 years, however I was refering to the last time (finnished 2 months ago) when I read them to my 2 boys (Age 4 and 6).They don't have the attention span for more than an hour of reading at a time.

I too enjoyed some of  J K Rowlings books .My daughter encouraged me to try them a few years back.I read the first 4 all in one go so I burned out on them and have read no more, but they have done a great job of turning many young folks on to a great genre.

opps!, I just saw that this is in the TPB section, I ment to post it in General.

I'll read just about anything. I read a lot of modern (pre-1960) British literature, and most of my favorite books are from that era. Also read film criticism, the more subtle horror and fantasy, comix, essays, occasionally poetry. A few favorite authors: Thoreau, Hesse, Waugh, Antonia White, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Shirley Jackson, Carson McCullers, Brendan Behan. More recent stuff I like: Graham Joyce, Dennis Lehane, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub.

I work at a bookstore, and I would love to chat books with y'all anytime  :)  Thanks, saucy bastard, for starting this thread!

(IJ: you are a fast reader. Personally, it took me for-fucking-ever to read LOTR, but it was worth it.)

So Shitrockk- you included Carson McCullers in your list - how about Truman Capote? They were childhood neighbours and friends - sometimes they wrote about each other. 'course Truman takes us to Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal. The southern writers from that period are giants.

Hey BB, I haven't read much Capote but what I have read (In Cold Blood, some short pieces) is great. Love Tennessee Williams-- my little sis is in fact writing a paper on him for her high school American lit class this year. I've actually never read any of Gore Vidal's novels, only a bit of criticism and essays. I agree with you about the South. (Oh yeah, and Harper Lee too-- shame she only wrote one book.) For some reason it seems to produce many of America's greatest writers.

Here is a little known fact about Harper Lee - She worked in Holcombe, Kansas, as a research assistant for Truman Capote's novel In Cold Blood in 1959. (She published "To Kill A Mocking Bird" in 1960.)

"Chronicle of a Death Foretold" is a novella whose story happens all in one day, and it is the best short novel I have ever read. You are right GD, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a truly amazing writer.
"The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor" - is that a novel or short story?

Right now I am reading  "God Has a Dream" By Bishop Desmond Tutu.

I think Bishop Tutu should rule the world. This book was featured on "The Daily Show" and Jon Stewart said "I believe you are the nicest man I've ever met." He is. On deck is Al Franken's "Lies & the lying liars who tell them"
It seems I'll never get to my Benjamin Franklin book.

Runaway/Alice Munro  and  Open All Night/Charles Bukowski. The first is a new collection of short stories, the latter is a collection of poems. Both writers are amazingly gifted and amongst my faves.

Clive Cussler
Trojan Odyssey
A Dirk Pitt novel (paperback)

It's a bit of a struggle, but I tend to fall asleep whenever I even read a magazine these days.  I just love how he bases all of his "marine archeology" novels on facts  :D

It may also be noted that Mr. Cussler frequents the maritimes, both in search of lost shipwrecks (mostly his NUMA crew of scientists and experts he assembles these days), and also the program "The Sea Hunters" is (was?) filmed in Nova Scotia  :)
