Cool Bands You Want to Push on your Friends
« on: Jan 29, 2006, 11:21 PM »
Hi gang,

I have been on new music binge for a couple of years now.  My tastes had stagnated, and I was buying far more old stuff than new.

That all changed when I bought a new LP from a small, eclectic band from Montreal.  I am of course referring to the Arcade Fire.  They sparked a rejuevenation of my love of discovering new music...

So here are a few albums I have bought in the last week or so that I think more people should be getting.  I don't claim to be a great discoverer of new bands, and if I was I would be trying to find a way to produce them and make money instead of buying their records and spending money.

Here we go, in no particular order:
1) Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mother
2) Constantines - Tournament of Hearts
3) Broken Social Scene - Self-Titled (last track is one of the best songs ever)
4) Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Like Bad News

I would love to hear other people's comments...good to share info on good music.

I should also note that all of the bands mentioned above are Canadian!!!

I've been talking about Matt Mays and El Torpedo and Cuff the Duke The Trews are getting really big.

If you like The Pogues you will like The Mahones, from Kingston, ON.  They've been around for awhile.

Deathcab for Cutie (American?)
Metric (Canadian)

...I can't stop listening to Talk from Coldplay

The Dude: Oh, no I did, but I spent most of my time occupying various administration buildings... smoking a lot of thai stick... breaking into the ROTC... and bowling. To tell you the truth Brandt, I don't remember most of it.

Ghetto Pony from Montreal is totally addicting.  They have a CD but aren't even touring yet.  You can download all their music for free.
Ghetto Pony Tunes

Trole is made up of a friend of mine (nicknamed Trole) from way back, his brother and a couple other dudes. I still say he spelled the band's name wrong, but I guess you can spell your nickname however the hell you want!!

Trole Site

listen to some of their tunes here... Listen to Trole

Lemme know what you think!!!???

I have a hard time with Metric...I really like the stuff the lead singer (Emily Haines) does with Broken Social Scene, but I find Metric's stuff to be wildly inconsistent

OK, The Trews...didn't the second album kind of piss you off?

I could listen to the first album every day until I die and it would still be as vibrant and loud...the second LP rings false.  It's too bad that bands think they have to go all Madonna, reinventing themselves with every album.  They need Gordie Johnson (formerly of Big Sugar, loudest guitar player on Earth and producer of their first album) and I don't think they should feel bad about making a couple albums with that same heavy groove.

Rock bands should NEVER sound produced...if grunge taught us anything it's that rock has to stay raw to survive.  The transition from punk to glam in the 80's was all about bands trying to get a slick sound...all they really got for their efforts was Faster Pussycat...and to that I throw my hands up in the air and say...Fuck, why?

Nor me, but they've said numerous times the new one will be heavy, probably heavier than Aenima (my god i can only hope, that's where Tool was at their peak for me).  They've been touring with Meshugga and another band, and have said they like their style, so can only wait and see i guess, but yes, once every 5 years (when a tool album is released these days) is always a most memorable time for me. :beeer:

I agree on the vocal part, screaming into a mic doesn't do it for me eithre, but nearly 90% of the time the music makes up for it, take Meshuggah for example, they to me border on that, but the guitars and drums are always clear and structured, infact awesomely so.  I could never see Tool and for that matter Maynard screaming into a mic, the man has waaay to much talent for that, take ticks and leeches for example, considered heavy by their standards, especially compared to the rest of Lateralus, and actually more reminscent of a cross btwn Opiate and Undertow.  But for me Tool has never done a song i'd get up and mosh to, for me that's not what their music is about.

Back on topic lol (hell i could talk about Tool all day :D), other bands i'd recommend would be Blind Guardian, HAmmerfall, Everclear, Perfect Circle, Rage Against The Machine, Placebo, john Butler Trio, none are new, some are chilled, all are good.

1) Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mother
2) Constantines - Tournament of Hearts
3) Broken Social Scene - Self-Titled (last track is one of the best songs ever)
4) Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Like Bad News

Yeah, Modest Mouse is definitely American, but they're still awsome. Wolf Parade are pretty good, but super over rated. I got their EP while I was in New York, before their fulllength came out, and thought it was just ok. I didn't bother getting "appologies" - also because I emailed them and they didn't respond, the jerks. ahaha

Broken Social Scene are great. still need to get an album by them.

I really like these bands:

Sebadoh
Built to Spill
Sparta
New Pornographers

Enrico, I also like listening to Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene.

Built to Spill is good. New Pornographers fucking rock. Their album "Twin Cinema" is awsome. AC Newman is such a wicked composer.

Everyone kind of knows about Death Cab For Cutie now... they're mainstream and their recent album is pretty hit and miss, unlike Transatlanticism, which is basically as perfect a cd as you can think of.
Plans is weak shit.

Bands I've really been enjoying lately though...

1. Clem Snide
2. Belle And Sebastian (Look for their new album coming out this month I believe. "The Life Pursuit" It's SO good.)
3. Sarah Harmer (Canadian I think? Anyway, she's been making her way up my list lately.)
4. Figurine
5. The Decemberists ( Amazing band.)

Hey BK , if you want a really good book to read, my wife got it for me a couple of weeks ago, it's called "Just a Modern Rock Story" it's a biography of Belle and Sebastian, really interesting read, I finished it in 1 night:)

Was it you I was talking about Belle And Sebastian with before here?
I think someone mentioned they'd been to one of their concerts.
