Canada's oil supply could top Saudi Arabia: report
Last Updated Wed, 11 Jan 2006 06:21:12 EST
CBC News

Alberta's oilsands could become the single biggest contributor to the world's supply within 10 years, says a report released Wednesday by CIBC World Markets.

That would mean a global shift in oil dominance from Saudi Arabia and the Middle East to Canada.
Alberta oil sands project.

The study of 164 new oilfields and projects indicates oil markets "will become even tighter over the next three years" if global demand continues to grow at its current pace, said Jeff Rubin, Chief Economist at CIBC World Markets.

The main reason is most of the new oil coming on line this year will simply offset older oilfields being depleted in the North Sea and Kuwait.

Rubin suggested global conventional oil production peaked in 2004. New supply in 2007 is expected to grow by less than 1.5 million barrels per day and will fall to less than one million barrels per day in 2008, the report says.

"All of the net increase in oil production this year is expected to come from non-conventional sources. While deep-water oil is the primary source today, we forecast that Canadian oilsands will become the single biggest contributor to incremental global supply by 2010."

The study suggests planned capacity expansions in the Alberta oilsands over the next decade will exceed even those in Saudi Arabia.

Rubin also noted Canadian oilsands would also be one of the few remaining oil developments still open to private investment.

Oil prices are expected to average more than $70 US per barrel this year.

There's going to be a "fistfight" over the oilsands primarily between the US and China.

Alberta is not the only place in Canada with oil, there's lots of Oil & Gas action in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia as well.

Expensive though. I read that in Fort McMurray, "hub" of the oilsands a bed  goes for approx.$750 per month. (not a room with a bed, just a bed)

Did anyone see the report on the oil sands on 60 Minutes this past Sunday? It seems to have generated lots of interest in the States. In fact the local chamber of commerce and many of the oil companies got a lot of calls from americans (primarily) looking for jobs.

Here's a transcript of the show:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/20/60minutes/main1225184.shtml

There's also a video archive of the program but it craps out (for me anyway) after a few minutes. Maybe others will have better luck.

Also an interesting article from yesterday's Globe and Mail's Report on Business Magazine.

Sheehan arrested in House gallery

Wednesday, February 1, 2006 Posted: 0645 GMT (1445 HKT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Peace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Tuesday in the House gallery after refusing to cover up a T-shirt bearing an anti-war slogan before President Bush's State of the Union address.

"She was asked to cover it up. She did not," said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman, adding that Sheehan was arrested for unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail, Schneider said.

Schneider said shortly after the State of the Union speech that Sheehan was still being held but should be "out sometime tonight."

An early report from a senior House official indicated that Sheehan was arrested for unfurling an anti-war banner, but that was later found not to be the case. Schneider said she didn't know what Sheehan's T-shirt said.

Sheehan, who became a vocal war opponent after her son was killed in Iraq, was an invited guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-California, who has called for a withdrawal of troops in Iraq and supports legislation for the creation of a Department of Peace.

Sheehan has pestered the Bush administration since August, when she and hundreds of fellow protesters began demanding an audience with the president and camping outside his ranch in Crawford, Texas.

She also recently penned a book, "Not One More Mother's Child."

Sheehan and other relatives of troops killed in Iraq met with Bush during a visit to Fort Lewis, Washington, in April 2004, shortly after Sheehan's son was killed.

During that meeting with Bush, the president refused to look at pictures of Sheehan's son, didn't want to hear about him and "didn't even know Casey's name," she said.

The Vacaville, California, resident has said she'd like to meet with Bush again to discuss her opposition to the war.

Bush has refused to meet again with Sheehan and has taken issue with her calls for a withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

"She expressed her opinion; I disagree with it," Bush said in August. "I think immediate withdrawal from Iraq would be a mistake."

CNN.com's Eliott C. McLaughlin contributed to this report.

You Albertans better use that $400 cheque to buy yourselves some guns and ammo in case the Americans decide they want your oil.

Yeah I at least hope the choice of title for the thread was tongue in cheek.

It is great news that Canada is so oil-rich.

Yeah Four Eyes I saw that on 60 Minutes, looks extremely promising.

Of course, but it was based on the article.  We all know that the US wouldn't do something like that, would they?  I saw another article that said the Chinese are eyeing the oil sands too.

China is now the worlds 5th largest economy and any threat of foriegn invasion will more than likely come from them.

The US doesn't go to war, especially with our allies, for personal gain. The war in Iraq has nothing to do with oil. We get our oil from Saudi Arabia and other friendly countries. The French get their oil from Iraq, hence their objection to the war.

Actually, the US get more oil from Canada than any other single country including Saudi.

They've already bought a stake and are looking for more. A contingent from Japan's energy agency were there last week and they already have an existing stake in the oilsands. The French bought in a few months ago also.

The US also has a presence there and are thought to greatly increase that when the SEC relaxes its reserve reporting rules. After that happens, there could be an "invasion" of sorts. Here's an article called "Big Oil set to pounce in Alberta: expert"

http://www.globeadvisor.com/servlet/ArticleNews/story/gam/20050806/ROILSANDS06/

The Aberta Oilsands is a very strategic global resource when you consider its enormous size and that many of the world's other oil-rich countries are very unstable and cannot be depended on. Much unlike Canada.
