I watched a show on the Food Network the other day The Secret Life of..  and they did one on HotDogs.  I never knew the American public were so dead set against Ketchup on a dog.  It's a staple for me.  There were some great looking dogs though, chilli cheese in LA, Chicago style with pickle tomatoes and kraut, and the new york style with just mustard.

So I know exactly what I'm having for lunch.

I know Shake!! Next thing you know I'll be drinking....HOT CHOCOLATE   !!!

No ketchup (or catsup) on American hot dogs!?! For a long time that's all I would eat on my hot dog, now I like mustard to go with the ketchup. I didn't know that New York style dogs only have mustard on them (& it's probably the spicy kind, right? That's the kind they seemed to have at all the hot dog venders in NYC), thanks for my lesson of the day, SMG.

I'm sure you can get whatever you want but some of the hot dog nazis on the show were pretty adament about what went on the dogs.
You gotta have ketchup unless there's a completly different dog going on aka chili dog, or whistle dog.  I doubt ketchup would taste good on a dog covered with saur kraut and onions, but you never know.

I think Clint Eastwood's character Dirty Harry said it best in the movie Sudden Impact.

Nobody and I Mean NOBODY puts ketchup on a hot dog  :P ;)

While running to see a movie recently, I ate a street dog in Toronto -( btw, when Bill Clinton was here signing his book last year, he remarked on the fact that Toronto has veggie dogs selling briskly on the streets, and he wished the U.S. was so progressive, etc.) twas a big veggie weiner with mustard, ketchup, onions and a ton of sourkraut. A very tasty gonna-be-late-if-I-don't-hurry meal for $2., add a tasty beverage (diet-coke) for $1. and yr rockin!

always put ketchup on yr dawg, mustard too cheers!

Hey CT, I don't ALWAYS eat veggie dogs, I enjoy the sausage dogs too! Here is something interesting about Toronto Street Meat:

In Toronto, Canada hotdogs are the only kind of street food allowed by law (http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/health/he/hd_index.htm) . The law sets extremely high (almost unachievable) requirements for street-food vendors, with an exception for "pre-cooked meat products in the form of wieners or similar products to be served on a bun". That results in a greater competition amoung vendors and excellent quality of the hotdogs in the city.

check here for a world tour of hot dogs: http://www.answers.com/topic/hot-dog

to be served on a bun cheers!

I didn't realize that! I just assumed that all kinds of meats were sold on the streets, similar to NYC, I know better now, I guess. When I was in Toronto for the TPB signing in April I had a dog from a vendor, very tastey! But I have to say the best dog from a vendor that I've eaten was on the McMaster University campus, just outside of the bookstore (RumNCoke, did you ever get a hot dog from them when you were going to Mac?).
