household poision you should know about
« on: Oct 16, 2005, 10:18 AM »
For everyone who owns an animal I recently had a neighbor who had their 5 year old German Shepherd dog put down due to liver failure.  The dog was compleely healthy until a few weeks aago.  They had a necropsy done to see what the cause was.  The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind.

The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe.

My neighbor started going through all the items in the house.  When he got to the Swiffer Wetjet, he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated "may be harmful to small children and animals."  He called the company to ask what the contents of the leading agent are and was astounded to find out that ANTIFREEZE is one of the ingredients.  (Actually he was told it's a compound wihch is one molecule away from antifreeze).  Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking its own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver.  Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure.  They both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick clenaups on their floors.  Necropsies weren't done on the cats, so they couldn't file a lawsuit, but he asked that we spread the word to as many people as possible.

Lord knows, I am back to the good ol'bucket and mop....

it has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an additive that is "generally recognized as safe" for use in food, it is found in a variety of medicines and cosmetics, and it is recommended as a safe alternative to antifreeze for pet owners. Moreover, what the Swiffer Wetjet cleaning solution contains is not propylene glycol itself, but propylene glycol n-propyl ether, an ingredient found in many, many different brands and types of household cleaning products.

Please note that I did not insult her personally by calling her stupid or a liar.  I only want to draw attention to the facts.  I did not even make a joke about my "Wet Jet" for god sakes!  That said, I will go back and moderate my tone per your request.

No problems there ... just be like me and don't clean anything. No worries about chemicals that way.

Always aware of these things, but odder shit has happened, my g/f is a teaching vet at the university and she has had a # of dogs that needed to be put to sleep for getting into odd stuff, saddest was sand in the lungs. Hype or not, if its something you dont want your kid to get into, then you dont want little fluff fluff getting into it either!

You didn't even read the link did you?

Quote from: Snopes website linked to in the above thread
Also note that the danger posed to pets by antifreeze (i.e., ethylene glycol) has to do kidney failure, not destruction of the liver as claimed in the message quoted above.

my g/f is a teaching vet at the university

Shouldn't she have picked up on this discrepancy?

Hype or not, if its something you dont want your kid to get into, then you dont want little fluff fluff getting into it either!
Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking its own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver.

Quote from: Snopes quoting the ASPCA
Veterinary toxicologists at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center have reviewed the claim described in a widely distributed email alleging a relationship between the use of Swiffer Wet Jet and liver failure in a dog. The email alleges that exposure to the ingredients in Swiffer Wet Jet caused a dog's death.

The Swiffer Wet Jet system contains water (90-100%), propylene glycol n-propyl ether or propylene glycol n-butyl ether and isopropyl alcohol (1-4%). These ingredients are safe to use around pets when used according to label directions and would not cause liver damage at product concentrations. Propylene glycol n-butyl/propyl ether differs significantly from ethylene glycol, the potentially toxic ingredient present in most antifreeze products. Ethylene glycol is frequently implicated in causing renal failure in dogs following antifreeze ingestion. Propylene glycol n-propyl ether and propylene glycol n-butyl ether are very safe ingredients at levels used in cleaning products and do not cause kidney or liver failure.

While you may have a great SAT score and a degree you might want to work on the actual real life interaction with people part of your "brilliance".  BTW, I have a degree and my masters and I still don't profess to be brilliant or know jack shit about all the crazy stuff in this wild world.  To do so would NOT be very billiant

I don't think tellkyle was trying to think he's 'so damn brilliant' - but rather educate, and put a urban myth to rest. A quick google search of "swiffer wetjet liver failure" brings up the snopes.com link as the first result. I'm not brilliant by any means, but when I have pets in my care, I also like to check into claims like this - and would have likely posted the same link if I had come across it first. Quoting webpages doesn't make anyone brilliant - but in this case it simply debunked a claim that I'm sure many of us with pets were concerned with after reading Arlene's post.

o yeah, cat-dog, I believe that you likely would have also posted the same link, but would have NEVER belittled a forum member in the meantime...

You're right.. he may not have gone about things the best way.. but I assure you his intentions were to only debunk a rumour, and nothing more. He was concerned with Arlene having said it was a neighbour of hers, rather than hearing about this through an email - which would only perpetuate the myth further as it seemed like she witnessed this somewhat first-hand as opposed to word of mouth.

And now a word from your sponcer...

Okay I thought about it and I am commenting, hay kid I got the email through vet services mate and, end of the day AGAIN if you dont want your kid or cat in it then keep the dog out too. I mulled over giving a long chewing out reply, but I am tired so I just have these words for you, my little tellkyle....if you trust the product is good for you then, harm free then please, in fact I insist, take a swig on me.

By posting this, I know I could draw the shit winds down on me, a park eviction notice served to me, but honestly, I did not post if for a debate or any other reason then, "hmmm, never thought of this hurting the fur babies, I wonder if any one else has?". Like it or not, all myths have a fabric or thread of truth in it and I know I would have felt horrible if someone would have posted that this or a like cleaning product hurt their pet or child. It was an interesting reminder to myself, and others who may be as scattered brained as me, that we had better keep a better lock and key on these products because you never know until it is too late and hind sight blows sometimes. She has seen a lot of pets with odd things they have ingested, got in their eyes and had festering in their lungs, from sand to dutch cleanser to kitty litter! It was a reminder kid, a nice little, "hmmm never thought of that maybe it should be on the top counter just in case", thing and I hope you put that much work into your education and career as you did in your post.

Whew,
cheers folks and I alopogize to all who may find this post harsh or horrid and to the admin, I am sorry I thought of a private email but, hay he opened the can of worms and to be honest I am too tired to be even a tad nice right now. I am sorry folks.

Tec Ricky did die for a moment, there was that grain of truth!! I mean come on people are we not supose to share interesting tid bits of info? Plus as with all things if you DONT WANT TO READ IT THEN DONT. What I do not appreciate is a member emailing me their little 'nit picks' as well as posting, so that is why I got very mad and responded. I mean it was info, not something to debate like the Ricky thing, it was INFO.
Good Lord!

on a scientific note, Cappy has been experimenting...

my wife has birds, too many damn birds....so every morning after she goes to work, I have been spraying the lil bastards with my swiffer. It has been a week and I'd officially like to complain that none of them has croaked yet. Can't trust any damn advertising these days!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disclaimer.....no animals were hurt in said experiment.
