"OTAKU" -Am I, Are You?

"otaku"  Pronounced -O (as in 0at) Tah- Koo, is Japanese slang and means something between "geek" and "obsessed". Cougars are "otaku" when it comes to younger men, an anime otaku  is someone who  enjoys many days of excessive anime watching with no rest. Otaku is usually somewhat negative, meaning overly focused or fanatical about one particular thing.

So am I "haircutting otaku"? As a child, I often spent summers with my grandmother, who  had a maid who also served as a hair dresser.  She was a live-in and we became friends. The woman taught me the basics of hair styling, cutting and colouring. We practiced on each other and whoever was willing. I have always cut my daughter's hair, my hair(not easy), my wife's hair and the hair of dozens and dozens of students. Today I cut the hair of a very shy and lovely young lady named "A-Rum" (more like room than rum). I don't have a pic of the finished cut, but here we are at the beginning:

So am I otaku? Are you? Google "otaku" -

edward scissorhand cheers!

Anything that won't shoot back!!!

Target shooting of course. Handguns, Rifles, Shotguns. I grew up on 136 acres of hills and trees. Hunting was as much a way of life as it was an escape.

I used to go out to a secluded police range and practice with my little .38, when I lived and worked in the Excited States. But it wernt no "otaku" deal, I didn't get hot playin with or shootin the gun. I do, however, LOVE to cut hair. I have never been paid for cutting or dyeing anyone's hair, but I  enjoy it! It is like an odd hobbie. I worked as a journalist because I enjoy "conversation" - all of my "work" has been for the chatting.

otaku cheers

Ok maybe I am not otaku about shooting, but there was a certain satisfaction from knowing that you are providing food for your family. 8)

Providing food is much too practical to be "OTAKU". Otaaku is what you do for the sheer love of doing it - like c.d. creating this board, because he ENJOYED doin it! Everyone is fanactical about survival, when it becomes a pressing issue, but after that, what are your obsessions? Are you TPB otaku???

 perverted cheers :D :D :D !

Shooting rotten pumpkins with a .410 shotgun is a heck of a lot of fun. OR assassinating lemons with a WWII 3030 from my watertank vantage point while they're floating down irrigation channels. Sometimes it's more visually satisfying to leave the bayonette on.

I live in the city now, and in different times. But it was a lot of fun and nothing got killed or hurt. It was a different story when we started making swords. My little brother didn't fare well out of the whole deal.

If I'm OTAKU about anything, it's probably Music and Comedy and both. I think a lot of people here can relate. And also playing my guitar or sampler til my brain stops hurting.

And i'm out, full clout.

I took great pleasure from shooting a large firm pumpkin with a 30-06....it disappeared!

Those pumpkins really have had it too good, for too long. They steal our jobs and our womenfolk. It takes people like u and me to make a difference, Saucy.

I do dream of a day when animal and vegetable can live in peace. But that time aint now.

Agreed Djet. I find that if I try not feel bad about being stoned... I do it less frequently. That might say more about my Catholic upbringing than anything else tho.  :D

"Otaku" has special relevance to Anime and Manga, in particular it refers to fanatical sorts that wear silly costumes to Anime conventions.  Such as "Sailor Moon" here.  (I'm gonna go die laughing)

Hey BigB,

I think maybe the term OTAKU has evolved somewhat since you were here.  The term is now almost completely negative and, while loosely translated as 'geek' or 'nerd' it connotes someone who is so obsessed by something (anime, computers, video games, etc.) that they lose all social skills and prefer to live in isolation.

There have been many cases recently here in Japan of sociopaths (often teens) who have committed atrocious acts (i.e. beheading classmates, raping women and stabbing teachers) in which those who knew them described them as OTAKU.

From invert (OTAKU) to pervert (CHIKAN).

In many of these cases, these inverts cite being bullied at school as the main motivation for their crimes.

I'm into Trailer Park Boys, but being here in Japan and so close to these freaky stories, I don't think I would go around calling myself a Trailer Park Otaku.

I'm not saying you can't call yourself a haircutting Otaku, I just wonder what Japanese people really think when you call yourself that.

Now fuck off!

I got work to do
Now Fuck Off!
I got work to do.
