I met a legend!
« on: Jul 17, 2005, 11:18 PM »
Friday July 8 Randy Bachman was in Ottawa to record a live show for CBC radio in the brand new CBC building.  He was recording a show with his son Tal.   I didn't even know about it, but a friend gave me the tickets when he found out he couldn't make it.  If you go back to my post in the 10 favorite bands thread, you will see how highly I rate Randy Bachman

Quote from: shake
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
The Tragically Hip
Led Zeppelin
Bob Dylan
Randy Bachman (which includes The Guess Who, BTO, Ironhorse, and his brilliant solo stuff that went mostly unnoticed)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
April Wine
The Pogues\The Waterboys (Celtic Rock albums only) and Kingston's The Mahones
Nirvana

I have been a fan of his since as long as I can remember, (I grew up in a house where my older siblings always rock albums).  I've always felt he was way too underrated when you look at all he has done over his career.  I had read his biography not that long ago and I was surprised at some of the stuff he had done that I was unaware of.

Anyway it was part of a series on CBC radio where they get 2 songwriters together and they trade stories with the host Amanda Putz.  They paired Randy with his son Tal, who had a huge hit a few years back with "She's So High", which btw is now the highest selling single ever in Norway because that World Idol guy recorded it.  The 2 of them put on a great show, it was just the 2 of them with acoustic guitars so you could really see how talented they are.  They told some great stories as well, they are funny guys.

After the concert I met Randy I got him to sign my CD liner of his BRILLIANT solo album Any Road, I hope you can read the lyrics to Prairie Town a song about growing up in Winnipeg he recorded with Neil Young.

Wow...Not very often you can say you were that close to a musical legend.

I have some pics to dig up and scan here.  A friend of mine is a concert organizer/promoter.  I used to set up all his security and medical stuff so I was given all access to some great gigs.  Stories of eating April Wine's cheese and meat tray and drinking their beer and jack while they were on set, to finding the hottest chicken wings in town for Blue Rodeo (which is actually in their contract riders)

Musicians are more down to earth than tv or movie people for some reason I have always found.  Great experience Shake!

Friday July 15 I went to Toronto for the weekend.  As I was driving into TO I switched over to Q-107 a Rock station.  They were recording live from the patio of the Hard Rock Cafe at Yonge and Dundas.  Apparently Kim Mitchell is a DJ for them now and he was there for the afternoon.  For those of you who don't know he had a few hits in Canada with his band Max Webster and an even more successful solo career.  You may have heard the songs Patio Lanterns and Go For a Soda.  My favorite songs of his were Easy to Tame and All We Are.

I arrived in TO around around 2.  I still had some time to kill since my friend was working until six so I had already planned to go down that area anyway.  I got off the subway at Yonge and Dundas and walked across to bar.  I didn't see Kim on the patio so I walked inside and he the first person I saw.  So I'm like "hey Kim" he was pretty friendly.  I asked if I could get a pic of him then he suggested that we get someone to take a pic of the 2 of us.  So he asked a waitress that was walking by and she took the pic.  Keep in mind when you see this pic I had just driven 5 hours in a car without air conditioning and it was plus 40 Celsius with the humidex, so I'm loaded up with sunscreen and almost ready to pass out from heat exhaustion.

Cool CartThief, I would like to hear your stories and see your pics.  Funny you should mention April Wine, another band in my top 10.  In this thread

http://www.trailerparkboys.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1640

I spoke of the time I met Myles Goodwyn.  I didn't have a camera that night, but I did take this pic of Myles and April Wine on June 30.  They played on the Dartmouth waterfront, and I happened to be in town.  They told us not to use the flash, so it didn't come out as good as it could have.

Yeah I managed to have a pretty decent weekend, too bad we couldn't manage to meet up.

As a side note I should make it clear I'm not just some loser that follows rock stars around.  As proof my number 1 band, The Rolling Stones themselves, were practicing in a building very close to where I was staying.  They're sticking to their habit of practicing in Toronto before they go on tour.  We drove by the place on our way back and saw some people hanging around the building.  As much as I'd love to meet the Stones or get a pic, I didn't want to hang around on the off chance I would see them come out or whatever, ha ha, I mean I do have a life...well sort of.

Cool pics, shake!  You're very fortunate to meet the musical celebs ... If you ever plan on meeting Mike Reno or Doug Johnson from "Loverboy", let me know, I'd love to be there.

Cheers,
B.

P.S.  You look pretty damn fine for someone who was about to pass out from the heat.

Thanks for the kind words Becca, the last thing I ever want to do is post my pic on the web, what with me being so un-photogenic, but I think they are cool pix so I thought what the hey.

Yeah its kinda funny to see Mitchell without his hair and trademark OPP hat on.  I setup a show at Gage Park here in Hamilton for him a few years back.  Another great guy.

The April Wine episode was in Toronto at CHUM's "SchmoozeFest" about 3 years ago.  They were the "house" band for the evening and I couldn't resist actually working the event.  So myself and 3 other friends took the positions on the 4th floor of the CHUM building which was dressing for all the VIP guests for the night.  We hung out with April Wine for about 5 hours that night, shooting the shit, drinking and eating all their comps.  They invited us in and asked why they bought so much food and booze for them.  There must have been enough for 30 people.  It was a great night.  We were all polluted by the middle of the night.  Great great bunch of guys.  They didn't have any promo stuff with them so just by chance I gave them my card.  Sure enough, about a month or so went by and an autographed poster showed up at my office.

It read:

"To the security staff at CHUM - You owe us $947.63 for booze and lunch is on you next time"

The poster was ruined by a careless renovation crew (I should have taken it home) but I have a picture of it that I will scan and post when I find it.

What a thrill it had to be to meet Randy considering he is on your top 10 list!! I just can't imagine!!! Well.... I can in a way. It was quite a thrill for me to meet JP and the rest of the cast. Cart theif said that musicians are more down to earth than tv ppl....... you obviously haven't met the TPB cast.

The pics are fabulous and that April Wine pic turned out great without the flash! Becca..... she took the words right out of my mouth. I think you looked great with Kim. I hope you got Kim's autograph too! He definately has some awesome songs.

Takin' Care of Business, great shots Shake. I guess The Stones will be next in line. They're in town, I think?  I have an unopened playgirl with a nude Keith strolling on the beach  I'd like to get signed.  :?  Apparently the magazine is more in demand for some guy named Peter Steele? - so says ebay,  it's the 1995 April issue. Anyhow I digress.   We need to have a TPB get together soon down at the Orbit!  Shake your in Ottawa now...All the action is here.

Yeah Randy's a proud Winnipegger, about the new song do you mean this one (Becca sent me this link)

http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/WinnipegSun/News/2005/07/16/1134026-sun.html

I didn't hear that one yet, the article says he hasn't recorded it yet.  The song Prairie Town that I got him to sign came out in 92, have you heard it Canuckguy?   It's an awesome song him and Neil Young rock right the fuck out on it.  He even did a slow version of it with Neil and Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies.  It's from his solo CD Any Road, you should definitely get it if you don't have it, Tailspin is another song that should have been a rock anthem, would have been if anyone had known about the CD.

Yeah I have his CD.  Tal said the success of Shes So High kinda backfired as a career move.  The record exec liked another song, but decided to go with She's So High to wet the audience's appetite.  Thing was a whole year went by and people were still requesting that song so they were reluctant to release another single.  They waited too long and the music scene changed too much.  The good news is he has a new CD out.

Thanks!  I didn't even think of getting Kim's autograph, it all happened so fast and oh yeah and the impending heat stroke didn't help.

Thats awesome! BTO music is like a permanant fixture in our house. I met Platinum Blonde in Barrie. But they were a bunch of losers. You are so lucky, thanks for sharing.
Mr. Lahey: Who in this park, or even in the whole world, doesn't have problems? Who doesn't have a drink too many times once in a while and maybe even winds up passed out in their own driveway, pissing themselves? Who doesn't drink too much sometimes or who doesn't have a puff from time to time? And who doesn't have problems with the people they love? This is our home. This is our community.

Ha ha, at least they had a bit of their song played on TPB (in the Christmas special they were playing "Standing In The Dark" as the power went out).

Shake.......you are one lucky some-of-B.

Kim Mitchell ? The King of T.O. himself ? I would pass out just in his presence let alone the heat. That's the Hold BABY !!!!!!

Oh we won't start on Myles Goodwin............

OK twist my arm !

Penny Arcade Club
Charlotte beach Rochester NY
Spring of 1993

Saw April Wine.
Smack dab in front of Myles where he could hear me sing along with him to "Say Hello" (feeling no pain at this point *wink* but Myles might have been with my singing :o )

At the part of the song when he sings "I'm for you and you're for me" we both pointed at eachother and then at ourselves along with the lyric.
We both smiled and laughed at the "psychic moment" we shared.

Kim Rules....Wine Rules....SHAKE RULES !!!! :D  :D  :D  :D  :D
You might be sexy Julian....but you can't teach me anything about liquor....

Ha ha, great story Sarge I'm glad you decided to tell it.

Honeymoon Suite had a shitload of good songs, I saw what's left of them last year at a bar in Ottawa, and they still put on a good show.

I remember when his big song "That's the way she goes, er That's Just the Way it is" came out.  My friends and I would often say "That's just the way it is, somethings will never change, ah but don't you believe it" in our "normal" conversations.  We'd also say "Get a jawwb" to each other.

I miss those days.
