Summer Vacation!
« on: Jun 26, 2005, 11:49 AM »
Hey everybody! Well summer is here, what are your plans? Is anybody going away? Just sticking around home? Day trips?
Anyway, my plan is I'm going to New York City for 4 days (leaving tomorrow). And in a couple of weeks I'm going on a hot-air balloon ride (which I'm still not too sure if I'll like it or be terrified). Other than that I'm probably going to do some day trips, like maybe head to Stratford (Ontario) for a play or shopping, Niagara Falls, or Centreville (in Toronto).
Centreville for anyone who hasn't been there is this neat little amusement park (aimed at younger children) on Toronto's Centre Island. If you live in the area & have little children I highly recommend considering this park rather than something like Canada's Wonderland (which is very expensive just to get it!). At Centreville, you can walk around the park for free, so if the kiddies are the only ones going on the rides, you only have to pay for that. My sisters & I have been going there for years, and even though we are much older than the intended audience (we are 13, 16 & 25), we love it! Also for anyone who is a fan of Kids in the Hall, you may recognize some of the locations from the show (the parts before commercials that show the Kids goofing around); I know that the log ride appears, & the swan ride I think.
Anyone else want to recommend good summer vacation destinations?

Wow - sounds like you're in for a fantastic trip - enjoy to the max :).  Centreville is cool - haven't been there for years though.

I myself tend to only work 10 - 20 hours a week from May to September each year and enjoy the good weather that way.  Lots of day trips - bopin' around the city doing stuff we usually wouldn't do and see stuff we usually wouldn't see.  Cottage on Thurs of Fri every other week or so and then on the weekends every other week to see the other cottage peeps.  I also head to see my famil in Thunder Bay for at least a week each summer - usually during July.

Other than that nothing big - just tryin' to relax and enjoy the westher bofore it starts snowing again

I myself am finishing this short work week, and then I am on Paternity leave for a month.  The whole family is packing up and heading to the Maritimes for a whole month.  NB for a few days, drivin' to South coast of NFLD for a couple weeks, then back to NB for a week and a half.  Can't wait, no worries about work, just a whole month to sit back and relax.

Might not have the internet access I'm used to so I may not catch up on the Org's goings on, but I'll manage.

August, I'll be back to work but that's when the fun stuff around here is going on.  Ribfest in August is awesome.  Festival of the Islands in Gananoque has David Wilcox, great big sea, the trews and burton cummings among others coming.  The stones in Ottawa at the end of August.

Gonna be a good summer.

This summer, just like last ... I'm ... working.

I need to win the lottery and just not need to work again.

LOL

Been playing a lottery game once a week that if you win, they pay $2000US a week for the rest of your life. I wouldn't mind winnning that.

Then I could go on holiday any time I wanted.

Here's a few pics:

Relaxing on the beach with a beer and a walkman, watching the girls in bikinis walk by.  Driving down the road with the windows down, watching the girls in bikinis walk by.... well you get my point!  Summertime rules!  I hope everyones having a good summer and getting out in the sun.  Summer is short so take advantage of it while you can.

I just LOVE the summer -be it short as it is.  My plan for this summer is to do as little as possible.  I'm only working 8-20 hours a week now by choice as I want to send as much time outside as possible.  Thank go for wifi or I'd spend more time working inside and not outside!

Very nice pics Melba. Unfortunately I can't take vacation in the summertime where I'm a cook and it is the busiest time of the year. :(  I'm lucky to be getting a 3 day weekend this weekend!!

Here's an article about travelling to Cape Breton/Nova Scotia (which I will be doing :)

http://www.canoe.ca/Travel/MyTravels/2005/07/05/1118225.html

I'll paste it here, since I don't know how long that link will be good for.

Destination: NOVA SCOTIA

Cape Breton: A photographer's haven

By KEVIN MOORE -- Special to Canoe Travel

Too many Canadians like to travel abroad and I've never really understood why. Canada has some of the most amazing and beautiful places on earth to visit and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is one of them. If you love this great country of Canada that we are so privileged to live in, and you have the time, I recommend driving out to the east coast. If you can't take the time to drive out, then fly out, rent a car and drive at least the Cabot Trail and Cape Breton. You will not be disappointed!

Well, I'm currently in a fishing village in SouthEast NFLD called Grand Bruit.  It has 30 year round inhabitants, a few more during the summer.  Only accessible by cargo boat.  Quite nice, I'll post some pics when I get back at the end of July.

I agree FF64, it's nice to travel, no matter where, even if it's just for a day or two. It's good to go out & get the stink blown off you (being from Hamilton, sometimes that's literally what we need! Kidding of course, but sometimes there is a destinctive smell to our city).

I went to Niagara Falls today. It was super crowded. I take it for granted how lucky I am to live so near such a famous landmark. I've seen the Falls countless times, so I'm really not impressed with the enormity of it any more. But, I know that there are millions of tourists who come to the Falls every year for their one and only chance to see it. Anyway, we wanted to go on the caves tour but the earliest time available was in like 3 or 4 hours, & we didn't feel like waiting around that long, so we'll go back in the fall or winter to do that. I've never been on the Maid of the Mist boat ride, it's a bit too frightening to me to be in the midst of all that crashing, swirling, whirlpooling water. I have been on the gondola that is a few kilometres down the river that goes over the gorge, that is a great view! It's not right at the Falls, but it's still neat to look at the water with all it's whirlpools & stuff trying to make a really sharp turn (almost 90 degree turn). For anyone who lives close to Niagara Falls, try looking at the Falls with fresh eyes, & you'll see how special it is!

It is a wonderful sight! Plus there's tons of stuff to do around there: 2 casinos on the Canadian side, 1 casino on the US side, tons of haunted houses & wax museums on Clifton Hill, lots of souvenier stores, Marine Land is close by (haven't been there in many years, so I don't know what it's like there now), lots of restaurants & shops. Wax museums kinda freak me out, though (not even the criminal & horror wax museums, the regular kind that have celebrities in wax like you'd find at Madam Tussaud's super freak me out!). But, if you are able to go, I totally recommend it!

I went to the falls in 88 when I was 15 and stayed in one of the hotels but I can't remember the name.  I've got some pics of the falls, must pull them out sometime.  I have some friends in Ohio that took me up, we had a ball in Toronto.

They had japanese tourists in groups of 20!

Melba, my dad says that-"stink blown off you!" I thought that was some weird country saying but it's gone global (I'm in ireland) ha!!

I visited the falls in October 02 for my honeymoon.  It was my first time there.  Loved it.  The outlet shopping mall was killer on the bank account though.  Did the Maid of the Mists and some of CLifton's attractions.
Went to a dinner theatre called Oh Canada Eh.  It was awesome.  Did the wineries one day and then went to a rolling stones concert in Toronto.

My family is Scottish, so that may have something to do with it. I've picked up a couple of funny sayings from my grandpa:
http://trailerparkboys.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2902&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&sid=0c3004bd77b8337cf1210b002eb3332c

I forgot to mention all the wineries in the Niagara area, Niagara-On-The-Lake (a nice little town) and Fort George (which I haven't visited yet, but really want to). I think that the Niagara area has something for everyone!
