Official Season 5 Final Reviews and Analysis

Overall I really enjoyed the entire season it was darker and had a deeper plot, but still managed to be hilarious.  There isnt one episode I can say I didn't like.  At the beginning of the season they used a few too many weak Ricky'isms, but it quickly went back to normal.  As suggested by a number of fans, I would like to see the cast interact with the camera crew and sound guy more, with them getting involved in the shootouts and whatnot.  Every actor did an excellent job, and I cant complain about anyone not fitting their role, or overacting their parts.  The only slightly over the top moment was when Trevor wouldn't shoot Julians gun, but that didn't take anything away from that episode really, I just thought it was a little too unbelievable.  Trevor and Cory were great this season though, and I'm glad they got more air time.  I would have liked to see Ray in the finale, but Im sure he will be back at the very start of the next season so thats cool.  That big fat belly guy (Phil) is hilarious, and a few more interesting new east coast characters like him would really make the show great.  I would also like to see another special guest for next season, such as Tommy Chong, Tragically Hip, Guess Who, and so on.  One last suggestion is more trees and trailers, Sunnyvale looks way too bare compared to the earlier seasons. (This suggestion might have already been taken care of since they said they were adding more trailers for the movie)  But more trees would help alot too.

Grats to the boys on another excellent season!  I hope you all have massive global success with the film, and it will feel good knowing we, the loyal DVD buying and tv watching fans, had a part in bringing that movie to the big screen.
:leaf:

Just don't be doing that freedom 35 thing boys...we want atleast 10 more seasons!
:6paper: :ricky:  :julian:  :bubs:

Please comment about the finale in its seperate thread, this ones only for full season reviews and comments.

When I first started watching it, I really didn't like this season..it felt sort of weird, a little too different. It was, as everyone has already mentioned, a lot darker, more drama...not as heavy on the comedy. Now that I've seen every episode though, I have to say my opinion has done a 180...this season had some very interesting character development and hilarious/classic moments that I'm going to be quoting for a long time. Some of my favs:

Ricky sleeping on the swish chalet container, then stealing all that stuff from J-roc, "Mr Lahey and Randy to the fuck-off department!", the whole zellers cheque scam, the boys playing space: "Papa bear to dick and weed!", Bubbles to cyrus: "Excellent Jacket!", the oh-shit moment when Trevor let it slip to Lahey about the hash driveway,"J-roc baby! J-roc Baby!",  "Zesty mordant and dressed all over", everyone fleeing from the park, Ricky whipping the pillow at Julian's head in the first episode, "Dad can we keep a few grams of hash in here..." when in reality it's a whole shit load, Trevor finally standing up to Ricky, J-roc's airport speech in episode 10, Julian becoming even hotter this season...,"Corey, when I look up...you better be 50 fucking feet away!", Bubbles crashing into the tree in his go-kart, Lahey and Randy sticking their head in the trailer window taunting the boys, Bubbles about Lucy: "I own 1/3 of them!", Ricky asking his dad about C and T and then having it cut to him loading his gun and striding across the lawn pissed...and then of course the crazy gun fight at the end, Mr Lahey whipping George Green's phone onto the road, "DON'T STOP ON MY ACCOUNT" and last but not least, Ricky's heart attack, which scared the shit out me: "Don't let me piss myself!"

That said, I only had a few minor dislikes with this season...I didn't find the flappy bird brothers funny at all; I think there should be more acknowledgement of the camera; less crazy storylines; and no more of the "Suck my cock!" lines...they seem so out of character for the boys and are not amusing at all!

Anyway, I'll stop blabbing...this season was fuckin' awesome, everyone did such a great job...and I can't wait till season 6! :D

I thought this season was the weakest in comedy.. I mean I didn't laugh as much as I did with seasons 1-4. This season was based more on drama, which I hope season 6 will not be. I can barely remember the early episodes... the only ones I can remember is "The winds of Shit" and "The shit blizzard".

I need to watch episode 1-10 over again and hopefully it will grow on me. It's still a very good season and the finale was amazing (imo) but it just didn't have the hilarious wacked out randomness which 1-4 did...

Also Lahey was on the top of his game this season... he was just great!
"Knock Knock Lahey"

"Whos there Ricky?"

"A fuckin' shitty fuckin' trailer park supervisor who hangs around with a big-gutted drunk elf who thinks he's gettin' us thrown back in jail but he can't 'cause he's got no evidence and he's dumb as fuck, and he's got this other thing goin' on in his head that's tryin' to... twirly around and... fuckin' get... different... FUCK!"

Though I appreciate what Mike C. & co. were trying to do, I think this may be the weakest TPB season yet. It was a fascinating (and at times  successful) experiment, but in order to sustain ten episodes of mostly drama, you need a LOT of plot, and I felt like this plotline was really stretched out. It also meant that, for dramatic reasons, Lahey (always the most interesting character, to my mind) became a villain, at the expense of his earlier, more complicated role in the park.

I think TPB could take a darker turn, but I don't think it's what the show excels at. It was originally conceived as a greasy, hilarious satire of COPS and other such shows, and it was wonderfully original. This season it came a bit too close to the sort of shows it used to satirize.
(And a few things, like Cory and Trevor's erections, I thought were way out of place and didn't fit with the show's sense of humor.)

There were classic moments (Ricky at the college break-in, for example, or ANYTIME John Dunsworth was on screen) but something seemed to be missing. In the first three seasons, each episode was so well-written, so tightly conceived, and you always felt like the show had a heart (even if its messages were tongue-in-cheek.)

I'm sure most people here will disagree, but I wanted to say what I thought. This is my favorite show, and I'm feeling a bit disappointed.

Ricky says...

"This brain barely got me through grade 7"

"I might of fallen, gun went off, pistol whipped myself, I don't know?"

Randy asks...

"Would that be a double or triple Mr. Lahey?" Lahey replies, "that'll be fine Randy"

Lahey says...

"Sounds of the Whispering Winds of Shit"  In CBC's The Edge of the Night tone.

A fine season overall, above is from one episode I took some minutes from....hehe

A couple of my favorite moments in this season that I don't think have been mentioned are
Ricky trying to smoke the " foot hash " :ganja:

How about how after Julien tried to toughen up Cory and Trevor by teaching them to shoot his gun at the bubblegum machine then they get down on the ground to round up the gum balls like a typical little kid would do. In the next episode when they are dragged in for robbing the department store they are made to empty their pockets out  :stoned: and don't you know they pull out a few of those same  pink gumballs. Its all about these  details that I love :rastajoint:  :drugged:

Layhe and Ricky were the best. I looked forward to Sundays like a kid does for Christmas.

Weakest links were the flappy bird brothers. Glad they weren't around much. Wasn't enough Jroc. Loved The Fuckin Way She Goes and I am the Liqour. I loved this season. Awesome work.

I cannot say that it was my favourite season of the show. I think that distinction would go to season three. In fact, after picking season three as my favourite, I cannot really rank or order them. I like them all for different reasons.

What I liked most about season five is that the writing of each show seemed to do a much better job of tying them together. In previous years, it seemed that each episode could stand alone. It was much like Seinfeld in the sense that the activities of the characters were the most important aspect of the show and, more often than not, you did not need to know what happened in the previous episode to understand what was going on in the next one. Season five was far more cohesive. It is the first season of the show where the story seemed to be as vital to each show as the characters themselves. Even the show where they stole the rocket from Zellers and played space - which felt the most like it could have stood apart from the rest of the season's episodes - had to be seen to find out how Ricky and Bubbles got back onto speaking terms and how it was revealed that Mr. Lahey was still absolutely insane.

I liked season five for the very fact that there was greater attention paid to the main plot and the stories that were told all played a pivotal role in developing and progressing that plot. It was a good departure from past seasons of the show. I appreciate the greater attention that was paid to the main plot and the stronger storytelling. While it is not my favourite season of the show (yet), I believe it was the best written season.

My favourite scene on season 5 was the Zellers Prank that Ricky made, " Mr. Lahey and Randy to the Fuck off department, Mr. Lahey and Randy to the Fuck off department and Hurry the fuck up!"

It’s too early for me to make the call on this season. I enjoyed it very much, but need to watch it again.

I loved the 1st 3 seasons, and took a while to come around on the 4th. While the 4th season had hilarious moments and characters, I found some of the adventures a little too “zany” (ie: Steve French, the cops choosing only one dope trailer to investigate, the propane explosion). Season 5 swung the pendulum the other way, and perhaps a bit far.

It was very dark and brought us back to the sad side of desperate people in desperate lives (the addictions of Ray and Jim are front and center). While some don’t like Terry and Dennis, I found it refreshing to have two villains that are pretty lame. It’s totally against the Hollywood stereotype of a bad guy. I knew “tough guys” that were never that tough, so I think it fits. I thought we were setting up for a war with the Rock Pile, as Ricky was pushing them around, but alas, they fell in line. The final scenes underline that ongoing TPB theme about being from the park “one ma for all ma’s”. Even though Lahey, the boys and the Rock Pile have their issues, they all pitched in to fight Cyrus.

Interesting set up for next season. Lahey’s alcoholism, Randy’s disappointment in Jim, Julian’s new plan, Ricky’s family back together, C&T blamed for the whole thing…

You're taking this stuff to seriously. It's fiction, look at it strictly in that light and you'll enjoy it a lot more. And in case you havn't noticed, this years "set up" for next season is virtually the same as every other season, it's a bookend to the series. It's a concept they always come back to because it's the foundation of the show.

I say this was one of the best seasons so far, with the exception of "Jim Lahey is a fucking drunk and always will be" I think the final two episodes were absolutely fantastic!

This season was alright... Not my favourite. I agree with all the others who've said that this season was missing something. I know I didn't laugh as much and the plot was a lot diffrent from the TPB we're used to. Then, I suppose maybe I should watch it over again. First impressions can be weird sometimes... But one thing I LOVED about this season, was Mr Lahey!

Season 5, for me, was as good as any previous season and much better than season 4. I enjoyed the continous story that ran from eppy one all the way to eppy 10!
Also enjoyed the new characters, Terry & Dennis, and seeing more of fat-gut Phil. The darker theme worked well - deeper material balanced with the usual classic TPB horseshit  !

totally fackin pleased cheers!

I couldn't put my finger on it until episode 9. Then it was clear. There are a few of us out there that felt a different vibe to this season. Couldn't quite say what it was but it was going down a different pipe.

I thought this whole season was Ricky & Julian at their greasiest. Reason why??? It was because the whole season was from Mr Lahey's bald head.

Usually we see Randy & Mr. Lahey floundering at the hash feet of Ricky & Julian. This season it was the other way around. We had to watch the poor boys try and figure out ways to get out from under while we knew their effort would be in vain because they were merely Jim's shit puppets.

Jim was in control from start to finish. He never waivered or flinched.  The boys didn't have a chance.

Here is a link to bolster my theory:

This season was just simply amazing. Wonderfully acted and brilliantly directed.  The writers, in my opinion, deserve special praise for without their invaluable input it would never be as good as it is. But I fully appreciate and acknowledge that each and every individual concerned with the making of the whole series gave it their all and deserve to be congratulated.  In fact, if it were in my power I would give them all a knighthood!

I do not honestly believe there were any weak moments in the season, at least none worthy of mention. Everybody played their part to perfection, but he one criticism, and here I echo sentiments expressed already by other members of the forum, was the distinctive lack of interaction between Ricky, Julian and Bubbles, etc and the guys doing the documentary.  Hopefully this will be put to right in the next season.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable season.  A season worthy of watching again and again and again........................ :)

I wasn't too impressed with this season, even though I was looking forward to it from the second I finished watching the Season 4 finale.  Corey and Trevor trying to jack the money from the boys and buy the park for themselves was never addressed.  I don't care if they got ripped off by Barb, there should of been some resolve, but I let that slide.

Then it builded up to what I thought was a very linear result.  Ricky, Jules, Corey and Trevor in jail.  That's all fine, but it was so..  Uniform.  I don't know how to put it completely in words, but it was disappointing to me.

That's not to say there was a lot of good shit about this season, it's just the finale that really killed it for me.

*edit* Now I know why the ending disappointed me.  At the end of Season 3, you get Ricky as the Supervisor.  End of Season 4, you see Corey and Trevor supposedly jack the boys leading up to a big retribution.  At the end of Season 5, people go to jail as always, but there's nothing given to build anticipation.

Hate to overanalyze it.  I tried to watch it for what it was, and as a silly little comedy mockumentary, it's still pretty funny, but they made the subject matter so much more dark and serious inbetween the comedy that they made it seem almost routine.
