Car Advice Needed
« on: Jun 09, 2005, 02:58 PM »
Hey everyone! I was in an accident last week & my car has been written off, so now I need a new set of wheels. I would greatly appreciate some advice: which cars should I stay away from, which cars are really good economical cars. I can't afford a brand new car (hopefully I can get something 2000 or newer), & I'm looking for a compact car (my old car was a Hyundai Accent, which I loved). Any advice would be much appreciated! Ford products will not be considered.

Toyota ! The Echo replaced the Tercell around 2000. Both are excellent. A bit higher up is the Corolla . I have had and worked on many Toyotas ,and if you can keep the rust off , they run forever! The interior comfort is a bit lacking on those cheaper Toyotas , but the tradeoff is well worth it! The Corolla is a bit safer but the Echo has outstanding fuel economy.

Try Honda...Toyota is a great car, but the reliability of Honda is bar none.   Great on fuel and they last forever.  The newer civics are not bad to look at as they used to either.  Or try an Accord..

You said you are looking for a low price, newer, reliable car.

For price and reliability, I absolutly love both my Daewoo cars. If you didn't know, since GM bailed Daewoo out of partial bankrupsy after the Korea CEO stole & ran away with 3+ billion dollars, all the Daewoo cars in North America are now being sold as new Chevy, Suzuki and Pontiac models. I believe in Canada, they are the Chevy Optra, the Chevy Reno, Pontiac Wave, Suzuki Forenza and Suzuki Verona. You can get a used Lanos for cheap now, too, and they use most of all the same parts as the Pontiac Wave (Chevy Aveo in the US) as that is new Daewoo Kalos which was the next year model replacement for the Lanos. It has the same engine, suspension, and electrical components.

I bought a new 2002 Lanos in 2003 for $5900. The car had only 8 miles on it and it has been flawless. It is my 2nd Daewoo car.

Anyway ... just a suggestion.

Cliff

BTW: I have 2 Daewoos, 3 Volkswagons (old air cooled ones), a convertable Porsche and a Suzuki. :) Cars are one of my hobbies.

I have driven jap cars/van's all my life and never had any bother with them,
Rust is not a problem any more in jap cars like it used to be , is that not the case in NA models ?

I got a Ford for the first time in my life , damm great truck :-)

Why do you not wan't a Ford melba?
They are , at least the Euorpean models very reliable , and are one of the top selling cars over here .

Hope you were not injured in your accident , and that the damm insurance company pay up pronto :-)

Happy car hunting :-)
Don't matter how little you know, someone out there know's even less !

Some people hate Ford because they associate it with the jokes "Found on road dead" and whatnot..but Ford is actually a good vehicle.

Might as well just get another Jap car if you liked those little ones.  Honda is the best for japanese cars.

I drove a Honda Civic from Toronto to some two bit town in Michigan and back , neat car :-)

Only two problems with it !
It was a "non smoking" car WTF! it had no ashtray , driving on the "wrong" side of the road , not knowing really where i was goin , i did a lot of smoking, i had to improvise :-)
There was no tape/CD player in the god damm piece of junk, just a fuckin radio, well there's only so much Tammy Wynette a man can take ,sure she got big boobies , but that's it !

Aside from those minor problems , a  nice car :-)

Buy a VW.. they come in all different kinds of models and price ranges. The TDI (turbo diesel) is probably the best if you are looking for miledge.. Plus they are better looking than all the Azn cars  :D

Sorry to hear about the accident - hope you weren't hurt at all.  The one piece of advice I can offer ya is stay away from GM.  If you knew my background you'd be shocked that I'm saying that but it is so true.  Lots of good recommendations above - bought the ex-wife a Civic in '99 and let's just say the car lasted longer than she did.

If you are buying a used car be sure to take some precautions:

1. Make sure you get a used vechile package for the car - even if buying it from a dealer.  Pay special attention to any liens that may not be discharged on the vechicle.

2.  If you are buying from a dealer make sure they are a member of OMVIC and check the dealer out with them

3. Look for signs of excess wear that doesn't match the stated mileage on the car

4. If you are buying an extended warranty be sure it is with a major company like GE Capital as many of the smaller ones tend to disappear before you need them.

5. If you' re buying privately and someone won't meet you at their home address [matches the address on the ownership] run away - fast.

Best of luck in searching for your new car!

Awesome advice all! Thanks so much! I'll take it all into consideration.
As for me being hurt, I think I'm ok, my neck hurt for a couple of days afterwards (I was hit from behind), but I'm feeling better now.
The reason I want to stay away from Ford is the bad luck a bunch of people have had with them (my Mum had the biggest lemon ever made, & my girlfriend bought a super new Cougar & it was also a piece of crap that she had to get rid of a month after purchase). I always thought Ford stood for Fixed Or Repaired Daily, but Found On Road Dead is also pretty funny!
I'll begin my search next week because I have to work days this weekend, but I'll let you all know what I decide! Thanks again (any additional opinions are welcome as my mind is not made up just yet)!

Chev Blazer.  Gotta go with the 4wheel drive and horrible gas mileage.  Make up for it in the ability to go off road and run over people in Echos.  Wait a minute, I was dreaming about the Hummer I've always wanted, not my little SUV.

We had a corolla and it's great as long as no one is ever going to be in the backseat that needs room.  The Nissan Altima is a great machine if you get lots of quid from the insurance.

I had a Nissan Altima as a company vehicle last year.  Your not kidding.  Those cars rock.  Horsepower to spare and handled like a Cadillac.

Definitely great advice from the folks above.

So long as the car is Japanese or Korean you are all set.

Echo, Accent, Aveo, Aerio all good.

If you are looking for something a little bigger, Corolla, Elantra, Civic are your Top 3 for reliability.

Just for the love of God - DON'T buy a piece of crap GM.  It'll be in the dealer more then on the road.

You got it all wrong. Ford stands for first on race day. Altima and maxima have the best engine in the bidness bar none. Best american engine GMs 3.8. Max and Altimas are a little pricey.  Reliability has to go to Japscrap, but reliability won't get you laid or make your hair stand on end. I am a car abuser and my Grand prix has weathered the storm amazingly and can still pass 97.5%of the cars on the road, fucking Altimas! Fuel economy goes to VDub but so do repair costs , timing belts have to be changed every 50,ooo ks at $800 a throw. Hard choice Melba good luck and don't forget to  scare the dealer on the test drive. Put on racing gloves infront of them and watch the look on their faces. Priceless.

A couple of people have suggested to stay away from GM products, I just want to make sure I know which brand names are associated with GM. Chevrolet? Pontiac?
I'm going looking this weekend, there's a pretty nice looking Accent that I found on trader.ca that I want to look at (it has so much more than my old car!).

Here is some car advice from Lucy:

"I do dig this car," says Lucy DeCoutere, who plays Lucy on Showcase's hit television series Trailer Park Boys and who is behind the wheel of a Mercedes Smart car, a cabriolet with the top down, screaming her head off and swearing like a trooper.

"This car is designed for my kind of life because I don't have a lot of stuff to lug around. If you have to have a car this is the kind of car to have. I dig the esthetic. Some people think they are kind of dorky-looking, but the philosophy behind them [fuel efficiency] overrides any kind of esthetic."

DeCoutere -- who rides a single-speed bicycle around her home city of Halifax where TPB is shot -- hasn't driven in more than a year so she's trying to adapt to the car's six-speed clutchless transmission while negotiating busy Toronto streets.

"It's handling pretty nicely. The pickup is there once you learn how to use [the transmission].

"The only reason I wouldn't buy a rockin' Smart car is it's got a total 'look at me' factor, which I'm not really into."

DeCoutere's been chilling out for the past six months in Toronto after finishing shooting the fifth season of TPB.

I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt in the collision. Most people have already told you what I was going to say - buy something Japanese. I'm giving GM the thumbs down also. I had to get the transmission rebuilt on my '99 Oldmobile Intrigue after less than 30,000 km! I don't abuse that car at all. I drive it like an old man. In fact, I'm going to lump all American cars together.

A while back I was watching a documentary about the different philosophies the U.S. and Japan have regarding their respective products manufactured. In the early years the U.S. focused on excellent servicing. On the other hand, the Japanese focused on making excellent products that required little or no servicing - two different paths indeed.
