I know ODJ will like this topic..
so who is your favourite bike builder and why?

Personally I like the simplicty of Russ Mitchel and Exile cycles. He keeps everything clean no wires showing fat tires and just generally wicked bikes. I also admire the paint jobs of Joe Martin.

Great thread! My only knowledge of chopper fabricators comes from what I see on the Discovery Channel (American Chopper, Biker Build-Off, Motorcycle Mania). I think my favourite is Paul Teutul Jr. I think he's really creative, especially with the theme bikes. I'm actually planning a road trip to O.C.C. this summer with my buddies.

Russel Mitchel and Joe Martin represent both extremes. Mitchel is a super minimalist while Martin's bikes are overly elaborate. I definitely prefer Mitchel over Martin. I find Martin's bikes almost offensive to look at.

1. Matt Hotch
2. Paul Jr.-(OCC)
3. Scotty Cox

I think Matt Hotch's are just cool as fhak!!! I like Paulie's creativity on his theme bikes, and that bike "the alluminator" that Cox did, with that all metallic look just blows my mind. The more creative, the better for me. The only one I really did not like on the biker build-offs was Russel Mitchell, the simplistic look really don't appeal to me.

Matt Hotch? He was the one who made the chopper with the pneumatic, adjustable suspension, right? That bike was really cool. Scotty Cox was a member of Team Australia in the World Biker Build-Off, right? "The Aluminator" bike was fantastic. I my opinion Cox should have won that competition. He put in so much time hammering those parts out and polishing the metal to a mirror finish.    8)

I miss Indian Larry :( , but my current favourite "live" bike builder has got to be a tie between Matt Hotch (for "pushing the envelope") and Russell Mitchell (awesome classic look I just love)  :D

Scoty did put a lot of effort into it bu Russels's bike was the best. The clean black finish, the red spoked tires and the witewall tires was really classy.

Other friends of ours were in Daytona earlier last year and got to meet I.L..  He died the way he would have wanted to, if one can take any solace in that.  :(

Thats what I thought..but its sad that it would have een prevventable if he was wearing a helmet. I liked his philosphy on rims "Anyone can put a desgin into a computer and let a rim mill but spoking a wheel is a true talent."

Do you know how Indian Larry died? He was performing his famous daredevil stunt where he lets go of the handle bars and stands on the seat. Only this time the bike wobbled, he fell and smacked his head on the pavement. Of course he wasn't wearing a helmet. Some would say at least he died doing what he loved. The point is he didn't have to die at all. Many of the bikers shown on the Discovery Channel have this carefree attitude that I find frustrating. It is still possible to have fun and be responsible.

The funniest thing I've heard from a biker came from Eddie Trotta. During an episode of Biker Build-Off he mentioned how he'd gone to jail for income tax evasion. The way he described it you'd think he was the victim of government oppression. He said the government fined him for having too much fun. No Eddie, the government "fined" you for breaking the law.

I may have nothing in common with bikers' personalities, but I love their rides.

I know what you mean about the carefree attitude or how they hate wearing helmets, espically after someone they all looked upto died after not wearing a helmet.

I find Indian Larry's comment ironic. The last bike he built on Biker Build-Off had non-spoked, billet, rims. He claimed that chopper was the best one he'd ever built. Of course when building an oldschool chopper the rims have to be spoked, but I really like the creative freedom of billet rims. O.C.C. has some fine examples of billet rims.

PS - Those rim milling machines are super cool; just as cool as the water jet cutter. 8)

I like the OCC.
I am , in no way, a mechanical person but I think I would really like to build a bike.

If he's willing to teach you and you've got the time and desire to learn then I say go for it. 8)
