My Cardinal

Well.... I have this Cardinal that's been flying around my house everyday. He doesn't only fly by the house but he peeks in my window!    Seriously!!! He doesn't fly into the window and knock himself out...he actually flies close enough to the window and look in. I know no one would believe it so I waited for him the other day and I got pics of him. These are pics from inside my house in the computer room. It's an octagon window that's right above my computer. I had reduced the size of the pics and put them on Image Shack. Just click on the pic to see them in a bigger size. If I left them the actual size, it would have taken up too much space. Enjoy!!!

See....here he is peeking in my window!

These are couple other pics to show what he looks like.

Cute! What a treat. Sometimes they hang out around windows thinking their reflection is another bird. There used to be this bird next door that would spend literally hours for days and days throwing itself into a window near the ground.

Hence the term bird-brain.  I loved Seinfeld's bit about the parrot flying into the mirror.  "If he did think it was another room, you'd think he at least want to stay out of the way of the parrot heading right for him."

Hubby was saying the same thing hunnerbun! I'm glad someone else who's from NS mentioned that. I went for my walk today and when I was close to the house I seen him in a bush that is beside the house. He really seems to like it here cause I see him every day.
Saucy, I have no idea! I should try to. :)

Very nice pics of yr Cardinal, JR :!:  I see all kinds of birds, even though we live in downtown Toronto. Keep a bird feeder going through the winter - birds fighting with squirrels over sunflower seeds  !

One of the oddest visitors to our garden was what turned out to be an American Woodcock:

Stayed around our place, never leaving the garden for several days - spent a lot of time punching that long beak into the ground pulling up worms. The bird was about the size and shape of a cantaloupe. Then one morning it was gone again. (p.s. the pic is not one that I took.) Cheers!

That is WAY too cool JR ! Looks like you have a little "spy" to keep you company as you type. I would definately do a welcome wagon for the vibrant  fellow and fill a feeder with Cardinal food. Man I forgot just how bright red and beautiful they are.

I still don't know why AZ keeps the "Cardinals" as the name for our NFL football team. The bird doesn't exist here. I could see "Roadrunners" or "Scorpions" or "Sweaty Jocks" as a name that applies more to our region.

I took the liberty to email a few of your Cardinal pics to my friends and family back in the Northeast. I used it as evidence that spring is indeed coming. My Mom saw Geese last week. A long time pen pal who lives in Montreal wrote this:

"That is so cute, especially the one with the bird
looking in the window up close and personal. Probably
wondering if there is a lunch waiting for him or her."
You might be sexy Julian....but you can't teach me anything about liquor....

Gorgeous little birdie, JR!  He's quite the Peeping Tom, he is, the little perv, heh.

I too have never seen a cardinal except in pictures.

I've seen owls, woodpeckers and hummingbirds up close (well as close as one can get).  Nature never ceases to amaze.

Cheers,
B.

I love the "simple song" they sing and how easy it is to find them when do you hear them, except for the females sometimes.

Before we moved in to where we are now, I've always loved cardinals, but never saw them.  Now I see them all the time, about 3 buzzing around every now and again (I say 3 only because I've seen 3 all at one time, once).  Them and a big old mean blue jay.  And a pair of goldfinches the last 2 springs.  I really wish I'd have my camera ready, they're always gone or behind something by the time I get it out  :P

The weirdest thing I'd ever seen in our yard was a pair of mallards last spring!  I saw something scampering into the back corner one day through the office window, and upon closer inspection, it was a male, making his way to his mate, who appeared to be lookign for a nesting spot!  And this is before we put a pond in, so they might come back and stay this year.  And at least this time I had a camera out (the female with in amongst the tall grass at that back corner) :)

That's cute purple_squirrel! Hope they come back to your pond.
Hummingbirds are sooooo cute! I have them around the house all the time in the summer where I have gardens. I always make sure to have flowers that they enjoy to feed on. It's amazing how fast their wings go and the sound it makes...... too cool! :)

JR, what part of NS are you in?
my mother and i keep our bird feeders full all year round and neither of us have ever seen a cardinal.  my mom had a blue jay that used to eat right out of her hand.  she even put peanuts on the kitchen table and he'd fly in, pick them up and go right back out again.  probably would have thought twice if he had seen my dad standing there with a couple of buns. :D

Hey Jaloopa! Cool story! I live in Milton - it's just outside of Liverpool. To make it easier on ya... I live about 30 minutes away from Bridgewater and it takes about an hour and a half to reach Halifax. I don't think too many ppl know Milton but some are familiar with Liverpool. If you get off of Highway 103 - Exit 19... Left takes you to Liverpool and right takes you to Milton. :)

Put the kettle on, JR, I'll be right there.   :P

I love birds.

Years and years ago, I used to have a little blue budgie whom I named "David Lee Roth".  My family and I just used to call him "Davey".  Davey would love to perch on someone's shoulder and be petted - if you didn't pet him, he'd gently peck at your cheek until you did.

When my parents played cards, he'd sit on the table and watch.  They usually played rummy, and when they placed their cards on the table, Davey would use his beak to nudge a card off the edge of the table and then watch it fall.  Once it hit the ground, he'd do a little dance and chirp happily.  He'd do that until chased away.

He hated my grandmother and my older brother (hey, the bird had taste).  He bit them both only once - but the bites were deep and drew blood.  I was so proud of him, heh.

Cheers,
B.

Davey sounded like a really cool bird. So you like chirping birds do you Becca?  I have always dreaded hearing crows cawing in the morning, or whatever bird making whatever noise they make.  In the last apartment building I lived in I was awoken more than a few times by pigeons landing outside my bedroom window and making their noises, those things are loud.

Having said all that, it is pretty neat that the cardinal comes to visit you JR.

Hey Becca! Davey sounded like he was one awesome bird! I would have loved to see him do his card trick. David Lee Roth eh?! You have great taste girl.....but I knew that already!  :D

Yep, JR, Davey was a cool bird - emphasis on "was".  One day, when my dad was renovating the house, he left the back door open and Davey yearned for "The Kiss of Freedom" and whooshed out.  My dad ran out to get him but Davey was off into the wild blue yonder.  I still had my two hamsters (Eddie and Alex) to comfort me.

Did your little red buddy visit you today?

Cheers,
B.
