What took so long for Ottawa to get a team? Now if only Windsor would get awarded a franchise. It'd be nice to have a REAL PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM in these parts...

Ottawa has had 2 CFL teams in the past, they weren't getting the support they needed.

I'm fairly disappointed they didn't go with 'Roughriders'.
Loyal Canucks fan, and avid Tragically Hip fan. I like drinking rum and cokes and long walks along the shit ledge.

Yeah that would have been a good choice but apparently Saskatchewan took steps to ensure nobody could use the name after the Ottawa Rough Riders, or Roughriders or whatever they were :) folded.

They wanted the R on the helmet still, makes sense, one of the names being bandied about was Ottawa Rush.  I would have liked that!  I'm not the biggest Rush fan in the world but that I could get behind.  It makes sense football wise too - rush.  I would have suggested they play the opening to Limelight before the kickoff, it's one of my favorite riffs.

The other day at work Sven said all the CFL teams should change their nicknames to Roughriders. I thought that was pretty funny; it reminded me of the Monty Python sketch about the Australian dudes who were all named Bruce.

LOL!I remember that Monty Python sketch!

I don't quite get why the name was so important to Saskatchewan when they named their team. ESPECIALLY given it's history.  My best friend lives in a small town in Saskatchewan and she is a DIE hard fan. She got me following them a few years ago. She even sent us all t-shirts. Now, I'm hooked. ESPN2 carries the games here.

I have a friend who has a house in Sudbury and a condo in downtown Toronto. (Yes, her husband is loaded.) And she (and her family) are HUGE Argo fans.  It causes some great "discussions".

I was disappointed as well with RedBlacks. Usually, Jeff Hunt (part of the ownership group, owner of the OHL 67s) is money in the bank. But this name is truly awful. Better names were suggested -- Rivermen, Rush, etc. Calling this team the Red and Black (along the lines of Laval University Rouge et Or) would have worked better. Still, I wish the owners good luck. CFL has a funny history in this city.

I agree about the name. The RedBlacks IS sorta a lame name.

Then again, my NFL team is the Browns.  Though, they are named after the great Jim Brown...but still. It isn't a name that exactly instills fear.

There maybe a 10th CFL team. Halifax's mayor has talked to the commissioner about it. http://www.thecoast.ca/RealityBites/archives/2013/07/25/mayor-mike-savage-is-chasing-the-stadium-dream

Let's see. The Halifax hockey team is named after Moosehead brewery. Can't really name the team after Alexander Keith, can you? Who are we kidding. Call them the Roughriders. While we're at it, bring back the Ottawa Rough Riders.

Actually, The Browns were named for their Head Coach, Paul Brown.
Who, after being let go by Celevland in the late '60's went to Cincinati to form
The Bengals of the AFL, It's not a cioncidence that the bengals orginal uniforms had the same colors as the Browns
"The Cleveland Browns were founded in 1945 by businessman Arthur B. “Mickey” McBride as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC), which began play the following year. They were named for their first head coach, Paul Brown. The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47-4-3 record over its four active seasons and winning the championship in each of them. Following the AAFC's demise after the 1949 season, the Cleveland Browns were one of three franchises invited to join the NFL (the others were the San Francisco 49ers and the original Baltimore Colts). The Browns won a championship in their inaugural NFL season, as well as in the 1954, 1955, and 1964 seasons. From 1965 to 1995, they made the playoffs 14 times, but to date, have never won another championship."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Browns
Hard to believe a Browns fan would think the team was named for Jim Brown
Why was the team known as the Browns before Jim Brown played for them?
Back to the CFL I just can't get use to Geroy Simon in Green & White, Once a Lion ,always a Lion
